Brookie lover

Do you arrange trips exclusivelly for this gorgeous specie? Where and how do you try to catch them? I love to catch and admire its beauty always, in rivers, mountain streams, ponds…God bless brookies!

Waterfox

I go up to the Blue Ridge to fish for them. Size 16 whatever seems to work the best. I just like to fish for them.

I love planning Brookie trips! Wake, up, grab a rod, either walk across the field, or hop in the truck and head upstream a few miles. Little beaver dams, cold fresh springs, blue sky, bright little brookies.

Skate dries, hoppers, flymphs, muddlers, the fish are always eager for something. Once in a while, I’ll come to a deep pool at a bend just downstream from a beaver dam… always picky, bigger than average fish there. Crawl across the grass and under the willow, dappling a little fly across the surfach, hoping one of those trout take.

Oh I wish the season was open here!

The Fish In in Canada will feature them, minimum size is two pounds.

…stunning in all shapes and sizes…

And Brook trout don’t live in ugly places

I’m planning 5 days in Maine this June to do only Brookie fishing. Its one of those places in the East with a healthy Brookie population.

I don’t plan trips for Brookies but I am always looking to catch them over Rainbows or Brownies. They are beautiful fish and they seem to put up more of a fight than Browns or Rainbows. I found a stream the other day that I had to hike almost 4 miles to get to, it was well worth it, it was the most beautiful stream I have ever seen. I caught 9 native Brookies all with beautiful color. They all had red bellys, orange dots with blue rings around them, and FULL fins, that was the best part about them. Man I can not wait to get back there this weekend.

I do a lot of fishing for brookies, and make special trips every year for them. Some great places for them I’ve been: Algonquin Park in Ontario, Reserve Beauchene in Quebec, and the Whale river in far northern Quebec (see my trip report in the “man in Canada section” archives - I went again last year and the brookie fishing was beyond spectacular).

Here’s a few photos of nice Canadian brookies…

Some from La Reserve Beauchene

And one from the Whale River (full spawning dress in July!)

I have plenty more where these came from!

There apparently are places with brookies here in New Zealand. However, I’ve yet to catch one Used to fish for them in Nova Scotia, and had a great trip to River of Ponds in Newfoundland where we caught some great brook trout.

I’m going fishing in Rotorua this weekend. I’ve been told there are the rare brook trout caught in the lake; just not sure which lake!
