broke a sage rod

yesterday trying to bring in a 3 pound or so large mouth bass up the bank.

funny thing is when it broke it sounded like that ping you here when a golfer hits a golf ball with a driver. weird!

first broken rod in 28 years of fly fishing. i guess the luck had to be broken at some point!

oh well its off to the sage repair department this week. the rod is an older vps 4 piece 6 wt so i dont know if they will repair or replace it with something of equal value.

looks like i’ll have to ā€œbreakā€ out another rod from the arsenal and go back and get that bass again!! :D:D

Ouch! At least you broke it while fishing.

Hi Normand,

That ā€œpingā€ is something I hope that I will never hear. I’ve done lots of dumb stuff with a fly rod but so far (knock on wood) I’ve been lucky. Most of my regular rods have a 25 year guarantee but I’m sure that the one I ā€œpingā€ will be the Cabela’s no-guarantee rod. Sorry to hear about your bad luck. 8T

When I broke my Winston last summer, it didn’t go ping, it was more of a loud crack. I swore i heard a .22 going off but the rod crecked at the ferrule.

Fortunately, the folks at Winston took care of it pronto and all is well in the universe.

I’m sure the folks at Sage will do the same for you.

Best of luck with it.

Jeff

My brother broke his Fenwick last year fighting a large salmon. He had the fish close to the bank and the leader broke. And like Jeff , we heard what sounded like a .22 going off. When the rod flexed back up it had hit an overhanging branch and broke six inches off the tip.

Normand — Well you learned one thing the hard way. Dont bring a 3 pound bass up the bank with a fly rod. BILL

Your story makes no sense. I doubt that a 3# fish would exceed the design limits of any Sage rod. I broke a ZA switch on a 11# fish. However, I would bet I dinged the rod prior to catching the fish. Good article on broken rods in the American Angler in the recent past.

Sage has taken great care of me in the past. Mine is an old RPL model and has been back to the factory three times (don’t say it…) they have replaced or repaired with the same materiels and I always ended up with my same great fishing tool. They do charge for a handling fee, which I believe is up to $30 or $35. I take mine to my local fly shop and he takes care of all the packaging, shipping and fee collection and calls me when it comes back. Good luck.

i would but the shop is now closed :frowning:
