- I am looking for recomendations for best value and warmth for cold weather fly fishing. It needs to be a water proof wind proof breathable hooded wading jacket for going over fleece undergarments.
Are you looking for one of the jackets that is designed to replace a fishing vest? (the kind with all the pockets, nipper retracter, etc) or are you looking for a jacket that you will wear underneath your fishing vest?
If you are looking for a jacket to wear under a vest, it’s hard to beat the Marmot Essence jacket. It’s super lightweight, compact, waterproof/breathable, relatively short waisted, and reasonably priced ($112 for last year’s colors)

I have one and like it a lot.
8)I am really a minimalist I rarely wear a vest any more. As such I really can get by without all of the gadgetry that seems to catch your fly line etc.
Not inexpensive but I wear the Tail Waters Jacket by Orvis and I love the heck out of it. I know Cabela’s has some with some of the same features for a little less money. I have had mine for 6 years now and still looks like new.
Cabelas Jacket ( with stretch panels and taped zippers.
Good value - Gortex

Simm’s Guide Jacket get’s my vote. It’s the most water-proof, breathable and durable jacket i’ve ever used.
Simm’s guide goretex
well there ya have it. Three companies who do not support FAOL.
& here’s another non supporter of FAOL… I just ordered a wading jacket from Columbia (the Oregon clothing manufacturer). I’ll let you know what I think when it arrives (~ 1 week).
Later,
Peter
Just out of curiosity… do these companies NOT support (as in against)FAOL or do they choose not to advertise here?
Well the Simms guys are just showing off
I didn’t even think of Columbia. Got their shirts and their vest however
Sorry, jusy hoping that one of our sponsors might get mentioned. Like, for instance, the one who gave away the great jacket like we both use.
I like my Redington Q-Nimbus. Works for me.
I had a Columbia wading jacket a few years back. It was a nice design, but it wasn’t breatheable or very waterproof (even though it was suppose to be).
Well if you want Sponcers, REDINGTON (assuming they are cause that is the rod FAOL is giving away)
I wear the zip off pants and sold the waders for awhile. Redington has come a long way.
Well, since he asked for recomondations, we both like these. I think they fit the description of what he asked.

Well that is why I went with the Tailwaters. I really like the neoprene cuffs that you can velcro tight and stick your whole arm in the water and your shirt sleeve will stay dry. Plus it has a draw string on the back of the hood you can tighten if you wear the hood over say a baseball cap to pull the hood away from the sides of your face. Plus the hood has a bill. The pocket have pleats so you can get a large fly box in them, plus the back one is pleated and big. Has fleece lined hand warmers under the front pockets. The bottom folds up and snaps for shallow wading or float tubing. Two water proof pockets inside. Draw strip on the bottom and the hood plus fleece at the neck so it doesn’t rub you chin. Soft material so makes little noise. Cut to allowe layering and also to fit over a vest.
Well, that is why I bought mine.
didn’t ask why, but, you forgot the price?
My Simm’s jacket has the same thing. Sorry Flygoddess, I had to throw that in. lol.
- I don’t know if you can them in the U.S. but I have a Swazzie brand (made in N.Z.) gortex wading jacket and it is the very best bit of fishing kit that I have ever had. They are not cheep at around N.Z.$500 but when I am fishing the Tongariro river in the middle of winter and everyone else is soaking wet and cold and I am warm and dry I think it is worth every penny. Two of my mates were so impressed that they also got one each and now when we fish together we look like triplets!
All the best.
Mike.
tks Mike, have not seen them. Sound great.
