Brass Rods for Spools

Okay, I have looked online, at craft stores and home centers with no luck so I thought I would ask you all. I am making a tool caddy and spool holder and know that my old Oasis bench has very nice brass rods used for spools. I cannot find these anywhere and from the Oasis web site they do not sell them.

Does anyone know of a substitute or simalar items I can get? Wood dowels are out as they are just not the look I am trying to acheive.

If all else fails I will give Oasis a call and see if htey will sell me some seperate from thier other products.

Thanks in advance.

Bob

A good hobby shop will carry brass rod in different diameters; lots of places on-line carry brass rod stock, too, even Amazon. You can cut it with a hack saw and sand the end down with fine wet/dry sandpaper.

Ace Hardware. In your woods, that should be 77 Turkey Creek Rd

5 rods @ 3/16 x 12" = $14

I used 10 penny nails with the tips squared off, but I was going for functional not pretty. How about aluminum rods, non-rust probably less expensive, HD should have them but they should have brass also.

Lowes and Mennards both sell 1/8 inch brass rod in 3 or 4 foot lengths. We do not have a Home Depot, but I bet they have it as well. It is in with the other metal stock they sell. That is what I used for my rack. Just cut them the length you want and smooth one end with a grinder or sander. I made mine long enough to hold 2 spools each.

I was going to suggest Ace as well. I was at my local store yesterday to pick up stainless rod for making bodkins and tubing for mandrels. Saw lots of brass, copper, aluminum, and stainless rod, tubing, flat stock, etc.

Thanks everyone. I guess I was too focused on individual peices that I really did not consider bar stock. See, FAOL has come through again.

Hi all,

Go to a welding shop for brazing rod. I have seen them have it in sizes from about 1/16 inch to nearly 1/4 inch in diameter.
