I was looking for a Gary Borger “nymph” leader formula, the one I am looking for has a piece or fly line (orange 12 wt) incorporated in to it as a strike indicator. Any ideas?
Hi. Try the “Leadercalc” site on the internet. I don’t have the specific address handy, but you will see it on some other posts here, or you can just do a search for it. They have a formula for the Borger Dead Drift Nymph leader, as well as many others you may want to take a look at. You can also download the whole workbook and put it in your permanent fly tying folder. It is a great resource.

Try that url. You’ll need to have Microsoft Excel to use it.
flybugpa - Not sure, but I think I may be responsible for your troubles here. My post on another board described a modification that I do to the Borger nymph leader. The fly line pieces are placed at the knot to act as an indicator for subtle strikes. The fly line is a specially made Sci. Angler line without the adhesive between core and coating allowing the coating to be stripped off easily. I know of two places you can buy these pieces - Flyfisher’s Paradise in State College and the Little Lehigh Fly Shop in Allentown. FFP sells the pieces already stripped from the core in 1/2" pieces, and LLFS sells a foot of the stuff still on the core. If you need more info, you might want to check out FFP’s website. These “sleeve indicators” give a little more visual help than watching your leader without the aerodynamic penalties of a large strike indicator. Only the outer core in 1/2" pieces is used and is slipped over the mono of the leader. Hope this helps…Ed

Just FYI - Gary has written about leaders in the present and the previous issues of Midwest Fly Fishing.

Heritage angler, yes it was exactly the post I was looking for, could you share it again? Thanks much, Rick
Rick - No problem! The Borger nymph leader formula is also on page 181 of his book “Presentation”. He uses 4 feet of .020 Maxima Chameleon, 1 foot .013 Maxima Chameleon, 4 feet of 2X tippet, and 6 to 8" of 4X tippet. The split shot goes just above the 4X knot and an indicator anywhere on the .013 section. I add those sleeve indicators at the fly line connection plus the next two knots. One big advantage of them is that you don’t have to move an indicator up or down for different depths. Just watch the sleeve closest to the surface and strike if it pauses, stops or heads upstream - its either a fish or a snag. Try a bit of floatant from the bottom indicator sleeve all the way up onto the fly line. Works so well it is almost cheating!..Ed
