Book about fishing for Buffalo!

There’s a book review on the Fly Fish Ohio website:
http://www.flyfishohio.com/fishing_for_buffalo.htm

These would be fun fish to catch on fly gear, although I never have. I have accidentally foul-hooked some fair-sized specimens when using spinning gear over the years. Biggest was probably this 33", 18 lb Buffalo:

My buddy caught this one on (in the mouth) on a lure a couple years ago…estimated it at @ 40 lbs!

Dave,
There is an annual run of Buffalo in the Duck River every year. There is a small dam in Shelbyville, TN and the buffalo run upstream until the are stopped by the dam. There, I have heard, they spawn in the large gravel beds. I have watched people catch enough in a day to can for the year.

Ed

I have caught them in the mouth on lures…but could never be sure it wasn’t just “luck”. More often, they get accidentally foul-hooked…cuz they are so big!

In years past I fished tailwaters where catchings where catching buffalo on lures was a regular event. The biggest one I recall was a 15 pounder my mom caught. That one was canned and made into mock salmon which tasted almost as good as the real thing.

My biggest so far is 27". It took a small minnow pattern I was using to target crappies in a tailwater. Have caught a few that way since, but not many.

I bought the book and read it over the New Year’s holiday. Its a very interesting book, certainly worth the read. I thought there could have been more specific info on how to fish for the various species covered, but I’m sure that’s a difficult thing, since every water is a little different. That topic IS covered to some extent for each species, of course.
Not all of it is about fly-fishing, but it is obvious the authors DO use fly-fishing gear quite often. They also do a lot of fishing from shore or wading streams, primarily in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Besides Buffalo, some of the other species discussed in detail are the varieties of Redhorse Suckers, Quillback/RiverCarpsucker, Mooneye/Goldeye, Whitefish/Ciscos, Bullheads/Channel Catfish/BlueCatfish/Flathead Catfish, Bowfin, Sturgeon, Gar, American Eels, Carp, Freshwater Drum. Those are the ones I recall off the top of my head anyway.

Man - Nice Fish… wouldn’t those be a ball on fly tackle?! I have a picture (pre-digital) of my only successful fly hook-up. It was only about 5# and took a Woolly Worm. Last year I ran across a pod of big fish feeding on cottonwood seeds. I tied on a white Boa Leech and it looked great until it got wet and sunk. I had an immediate hook-up and I’m pretty sure it would have been “Hello Backing” but it came unbuttoned. I’ll be working on a “dry” pattern.
