Boo rod value

I found a 1957 South Bend 9 ft 5 weight Bamboo rod for sale online and I wasn’t sure what would be a fair price to offer. Any ideas how much it’s worth? Thanks in advance

What model is it and any pics?

Vic

I know a 9-foot from 1955 in mint condition is worth about $200.00.

It really depends on the current condition and the quality of the original components. To know that, you have to have a good set of pictures or be able to inspect it.

What model of South Bend is it? Are all sections full length and matching? Are all guides and ferrules intact and well-seated? What is the condition of the cork handle? Of the reel seat? The wraps? The varnish/finish? Has it been repaired or refurbished? If so, by whom?

That’s one of the most popular sizes of a rod that was mass produced, so the price would be lower than for shorter length rods.

For good opinions from experts, go to Clark’s Classic Rod Forum and post your question.

Thanks for the advice I’ll try to find out the condition. $200 gives me a good ballpark value if it’s in mint condition. I didn’t want to make a ridiculously low offer.

Thanks for your help. I’ve been lurking along time and I find this forum so much less pretentious than any others on the web.

… I would think $200 would be a lot, even for mint
IMO somewhere between $75 - $125 would be closer
The only two on ebay right now with bids are both under $50

is the rod fished or unfished?
case and bag?
rebuilt, refurbished or stock?
what model?
two tips or one?
are you sure it is a 5 wt? Old boo 9’ rods can be heavy.

Abe, first off welcome to FAOL Bulletin Board:D

Though this is a great place to post your question, you might get a bit more input if you posted your question in the Rod Building section. The input you have gotten so far sounds fantastic. You might get more input in the Rod Building arena.

Hi Abe,
Welcome aboard! I agree with dudley on this rod. It could push the $200 mark but it would have to be absolutely pristine or restored to as new condition. Also I would not buy it “As Is”. If they do not allow you to inspect the rod and return if not satisfied, STAY AWAY! The only time I buy “As is, no returns” is if I actually have the rod in hand prior to laying down any money. Also photos can easily be doctored. Some uncouth individuals have been known to post pictures of one rod and then send you a junk one.

Just an fyi I recently purchased a South Bend 359-9 off Ebay for $15 plus shipping. No it wasn’t in “pristine” condition but I could put a reel on it and fish it tomorrow if I wanted.

I’d have a hard time paying $200 for the rod unless there’s some sort of sentimental value attached.
