Hi all, I am hoping to take a South or Central America vacation this winter in late December to early January. I would love to try out bonefishing (or some other type of saltwater fly fishing?) but know next to nothing about it. If anybody has any tips on good places to look into, I’d appreciate it. I’m hoping to make this trip as inexpensive as possible, so any ideas on prices would be great also. Keep in mind, I would most likely be renting equipment as well.
Being a young guy with an adventure itch to scratch, I’d like to go somewhere that’s not real touristy, but has interesting things to do and a lively night life along with nearby fishing possibilities. Basically, I’m looking to make the most of the daylight, then get a little rowdy and hit up some bars in the evenings…maybe mix a little sleep in here and there…so places without big, nice motels are definitely fine with me.
If anybody has any experience with this or suggestions, I’d appreciate it…thanks!!
Cancun is PARTY central and is also located just to the west of some fantastic flats fishing for Bones, Poon’s and Permit. I’m sure some others can suggest the best hotel and local outfiutter but from what you are looking for (flats fishing and party spots) I think that Cancun would be the place.
There are many great flats hotspots but the best are remote and offer no nightlife whatsoever. Cancun can offer the best of both worlds.
PS - I see you are from Bozeman. Just spent the past week there working the FFF Conclave. Man was it hot!
I’d second the Belize suggestion- you could stay at Ruby’s in San Pedro for under $30/nite. Guides are in the $200-$250/day range, although the nightlife is seriously lacking. If “other” sw fish are also possibilities, you might consider Ixtapa/Zihua. Ix has the nightlife and Zihua has the fishing. I spent a week there in March, and a muti-family stay in Ixtapa turned into great trip thanks to Zihua fishing. Guide rates were under $200/day, and the sea was full of 8#-10# bonitas and 15# crevalles. Your dates are high season in most places so take that into account. Wherever you go, I’d also take along as much of your own tackle as you can accumulate. Rented stuff is hard to find except at pricier places, and guide-supplied stuff can be a crap-shoot.
