With all the wet fly threads here lately, I’ve been spending a great deal of time at the bench. Every standard bobbin I have just twists in my hand with the small Peaersall’s tying silk spools on them. While at my buddies fly shop the other day I asked about a Materelli midge bobbin. “Sorry, don’t have any in stock right now, but try this.” He hands me a Wasatch wood bobbin. It’s a bit spendy, but is guarenteed for life, fits nicely in the hand, tension adjusts very nicely and it’s made for the small Pearsall’s bobbiins. I love it!!
REE…I’ve been waiting for that to come out, I’ve got the 14 piece set with a few extras…I really like their stuff…Where did you order it from and do they have an online store?
Casey
My buddy, who just happens to own a fly shop, ordered it in for another customer who never showed to pick it up. Any shop should be able to order it for you.
They do make some nice tools alright. I have several of their tools and am very happy with everything they’ve made. Good quality and very good looks.
Are you the guy who won the tool set on the monthly drawing some time ago? If so, I think I hate you! I really wanted that tool set, but some deserving soul got it instead.
I just checked. The tool set they gave away here was the 32 piece set. That’s the puppy I was drooling over. Looks like you and I lucked out in the wife department. They both know how to pick good presents.
did she get you the 32 piece set? I looked at that and it has way more tools than I’d ever use…I don’t even use all of the tools in my 14 piece set…at least not yet.
Nope. I’d only really take that set if I won it in a drawing. Can’t justify that much money. She got me a Jungle Cock neck one year, a bamboo fly rod another. Just little things that really count. LOL
I also noticed that Wasatch had another bobbin, for about half the money that looks like it was built with Pearsall’s in mind. Here’s a link to that one.
Nice…I agree the money for the 32 is pricey…14 is definitely manageable…I saw that one “the micro bobbin” I think…I really like the wood…just order the one from the the initial post
Dean Childs, the owner of Wasatch is one heck of a guy. I have know him for several years.
No one was more pleased than myself when he signed on as a Sponsor here on FAOL.
I understand about 85% of all the parts of his tools are made here in the USA. They are quality.
Check his site out and or phone him.
You might think these tools are pricey but think of all the “make do, cheap” tools all of us have that never felt good or worked properly.
I would love to own a full set but as of yet do not. I have been adding a new tool now and then and eventually will have them all.
REE…just order my bobbin for Persall’s from my supplier/dealer along with grey and gold silk and bramha hen dyed medium dun  I can never just order one thing…oh yeah…I picked up the hughes (sp) book last night as well.
Casey,
I see you are buying some Gold silk, is that # 6A?
If it is, that is called Orange usually over here and is the silk used a lot for Partridge & Orange.
Yeah I saw that…that’s why I bought the gold…I saw a couple of other patterns that use the 6A in my re-read of “The art of tying the wet fly and fishing the flymph” that I want to try…that’s where I saw the pattern for the Leisenring flymph/although he calls it a spider…
I also saw a lot of the HE patterns use grey silk, as you can see I’ve tied a lot of patterns without it and it’s hard to tell color…I just think its good to have…pick up a spool here and there and next thing you know you are covered.
Dun Hen is to try the pattern you posted hearlier Blue dun spider…also, I don’t really have any dun soft hackle…boy the colors are starting to add up…I still need to pick up a golden plover skin from Jim
…As REE said, so many patterns so little time
The bobbin has an insert to fit wooden spools. it doesn’t fit the plastic spool at all. To use the plastic spools I left off the insert and spacers and adjusted the brass nut to provide some tension while tying. Cured any wobbling problem.
