There are a couple of different ways to bleach things and for different purposes. Which are you looking for? You want to change the color of feathers and hair lighter or do you want to bleach hackle and herl for quill’s. They are different and are done in different way’s. Ron
Ron - Should have been more specific. I want to bleach pheasant rump feathers to a lite tannish colour to use in tying lite sparrow patterns.

50/50 water/peroxide or hair bleach. The stronger the mor you need to watch it so it doesn’t “burn” the feathers.
Happy Trails!

Tks!!

Donald,
You might consider picking up a copy of Dyeing and Bleaching Natural Fly Tying Materials by A.K. Best. Excellent book that covers the subject very well and provides pointers learned over many years of practice. Well worth the few bucks investment and could save you from damaging expensive tying materials. Just a thought…

and … it doesn’t take much to burn the “hooks” off the feather barbs. Of course if you’re using them for spey/sparrow type feathers, missing the “hooks” is ok.
