My “borrowed” bottle of Avon black is about out. I’m looking for advice, what is the best? Sally Hansen’s or some other brand of polish or are there better sources for laquer?
The responses to your question should be interesting. I use whatever I find in the dollar store. But then I’m a tightwad.
Tim
I use SH Extreme Wear “Black Out”
Fingernail polish of several colours works for me. I like the effect of silver or olive sparkle on the heads of streamers - although a final coating of clear is sometimes needed. The $1 store is a good starting point, and remember, in 8 weeks the drugstore will have Halloween (black) on the shelves.
My then teenaged daughter gave me her “no longer cool” bottles, but the dollar stores are the best place to find every color except clear, which isn’t really a color but the lack thereof. If you have a teenager in the family, hopefully a female type, there may be a source of various colors.
Are we talking about fingernails…or something else?
Not that I know LOL but the word on the street is that Sally Hansen is the choice of fly anglers
There’s no reason for that, they’re all the same
Be that as it may, though, I think Stage is correct that when it comes to choosing a brand of nail polish, SH is the pick of tyers more than any other brand.
That doesn’t count the hand-me-downs from the women on our lives, just the guys that go to the store and buy it.
If ya’ can wait a short while, in October, i.e. Halloween, they’ll be ample supplies of black nail polishes…
Actually in early Nov. there’ll be ample supplies at half price… or less. Last Nov, I picked up several bottles for a less than buck each!
with the number of people that dress in the goth genre, i’m sure that black nail polish is readily available all year long. cheaper after halloween, perhaps!
Don’t forget the glow-in-the-dark or UV colors (that glow under black light, for example), too!
If I have more thread, yarn, and fingernail polish than the two ladies in my household combined…should I be concerned?
I’ve used Testor’s model paint from Hobby Stores. It comes in small bottles that don’t tip over so easily and it is much less expensive.
The colors are bright that are nice for bass poppers. It even comes in flat finish.
Hi Bill,
Look for your local beauty supply store and you will find many brands and colors to chose from. Walmart often carries the mini bottles so you can try various colors. I use nail polishes of various brands and have not found them to be that different in quality although I tend to lean heavily toward Sally Hanson in clear. Hope this helps.

Are we all taken in by the fact that SH says “Hard As Nails”
Perhaps ol’ Sally is a fly-fisherperson and fly tyer, who found a more economically lucrative market for her personal fly head paint concoction.
Don’t say that because then she will start charging $3 more per bottle!
Sally’s here also…RED & BLACK
Not unless you start wearing the nail polish…
Don’t worry. I knit, and crochet, and my wife doesn’t, so I have all the yarn and needles. There is nothing wrong with it. It keeps my hands limber for playing guitar, banjo, fiddle, etc…
Yep. I use SH a lot. I even use the clear as head cement. It’s way better than all that more expensive stuff I used to get from Loon, and other manufacturers.
