Bishop Ca. Tackle Shops

Ok I am thinking I going to need some local knowledge…
Bishop Calif. I will have a day to cruise the town and speak to the local tackle shops before our pack trip. So not to look like a Bonehead Tourist aka flatlander (I did live in Bishop for a very short time years ago and thats what the locals called the tourist). Does anyone know where to go and who to see that they would recommend? And while were at it, Top Water? Sinker? Huh… Lets hear what you’ve got…

There are two flyshops right in the middle of town. You can’t miss them. They will be very helpful.

Thanks Gary. I remember them from years ago. Walked in once back in my teens and said wow if only I had money and time, mostly money at that time, hell money anytime. I’ll be there. Any advice on the type line or should I just wait and see whats the flavor of the month. Also if you don’t mind, what size/type fly rod should I be looking at? At the moment I only have an Okuma combo set up. Its a Tempest Series, mo. TS-903-5, Reel mo. T-5 with line 5 WF and a Tippet of 5X, 4 pieice, I think 9 feet long
I am very new to this so bare with me please. I have been working on my casting and it seems to be going ok

I think you will be fine with the 5 weight. Floating line. The fly shops will be helpful for what kind of flies. Of course wooly buggers. BWO’s and Elk hair caddis always worked for me. That is some beautiful country. The fish are just the complement.
Gary

Thanks again Gary
I put that on my to do/get list.
Your right about the beautiful country and as long a we catch some fish I am sure it will be a great time.
I was asked by my wife and sister what I wanted to do for my birthday and always answered STRIPPERS always knowing that wasn’t going to happen, then when I threw out the pack trip it looked great in comparisan. Nice trick I think

Culvers, Macs and Brocks are the three in the middle of town. They are all sources of information about what is going on locally. Of them Brocks seems to me to have more “fly fishing” info. There is also another source at the North end of town that is more “fly fishing” oriented. The name escapes me right now but it is on the west (left) side of 395 after you make the turn towards Mammoth.
I used a 4 weight with a floating line exclusively. Small (16 &18 ) elk hair caddis, adams, and a Randall Kaufman timberline emerger (grey) were the most successful fly’s. We were fishing in the Golden trout area above Independence and it was a loooong time ago. Have a ball.
