Is it a good idea to put zap-a-gap on a bimini loop? Do you put it on the whole knot or just the locking wraps?
I did years ago and then stopped using anything on any part of the knot. Can’t give you a solid reason why, other than to say I’ve never had one unravel or break. That might be attributable to dumb luck. Of which I’ve always been a willing recipient.
Best, Dave
I’ve gotten so I quite using super glues on any line or leader knots …or braided loops…
It hardens and creates a spot that can crack/breakdown.
bazakwardz …
If your nervous about the knot slipping or unraveling, a lot of guys tie a three turn surgeons knot in the double line as close to the bimini as possible.
Hope this helps,
DickM.
Loon Knot Sense can be used to make an elongated " sleeve " that will slide thru the guides & also hold the knot tight permanently, but Biminis usually don’t need any type of glue; whether it be a 12 turn or 20 turn.
I’ve read that the locking wraps have a tendency to unravel after going through your guides a few times. It’s a long knot. Applying glue to the whole thing makes it not conform to the curve of the reel very well. Maybe some flexible glue on the locking wraps would be a good approach.
I’ve never tied this knot so take what I say with that huge grain of salt. I do like to follow knot tests and knots have always interested me. From Backing to fly line I tied an Albright with complete satisfaction. The very large King Salmon yesteday put the knot to test nicely but it held just like it was suppose to as I was running down river after the fish since the backing was disappearing quickly.
I have never had the locking wraps on a bimini unravel if competed properly. I don’t use glue and have never had a problem. None of the anglers who I know who regularly fish for big game in the salt apply glue either.
I do regularly check this connection and have never found a problem, but I still re tie it periodically.
I’ve never had a bimini come loose either… an Albright…yes…a bimini never… especially in backing
The bimini is as close to a 100% knot as you can tie… they need no glue
Many folks using GSP/Spectra backing use a drop, just one, on the lock portion of the Bimini after tying a 12 to 70 turn Bimini. GSP is slick so that’s why some use so many twists and even that drop of Locktite 406. With dacron or micron backing I’ve never had problems that way so use a 20 turn Bimini and no glue. On my saltwater reels with the GSP I settled on using a 20 turn Bimini with the drop of 406.
