While on a recent trip to Spirit Lake, Iowa I caught my biggest walleye on a fly to date. It’s no monster but then I’ve only caught about 6 ranging in size from fingerling to this one.
nice walleye. what where you using for flies? I’ve tried a few times around the Storm lake area with no luck.

I used a clouser patter to which I attached a spinner ahead of the eyes to make it look like a fly rod version of a Roadrunner jig. I’ve caught most of my walleye on this pattern and have also successfully used it for spring bass.
I bet that was FUN! ![]()
interesting clouser variation. but if it works, that’s all the counts. nice job.

NICE! Congrats…
can you post a pic of your fly?
This. I’m curious how you get the spinner far enough below, or above, the clouser so it won’t foul??
I tie a very similar version using a jig style hook that I JB Weld a swivel to that I use to attach a willow leaf blade and then tie bucktail after the JB Weld has set, similar to a Clouser. I’ts deadly for smallmouth and even catfish. I use BIG hooks (#1, #2, etc) for warmwater species. Chartreuse, Orange and Green seem to be the best color combinations.
