big steehead! woohoo!!

went again today by myself. I had a blast! I caught a nice buck steelie on the lake erie shiner clouser I tied myself in the same exact spot as last time!! also caught a small mouth ina deep rocky hole and a carp 2 cast later. it wasn’t a sucker fish this was a carp for sure. no pix of the small and carp cause they fell off when i lufted then out of the water but heres that huge steel I caught! I estimate him to be 22-24 inches by measuring the rod when i go home! took me around the corner had to cross the river and everything haha!.

WAHOOO! Nice my friend! Someday I am gonna tackle one of those Steelies!

Good job!

For future fish (or for this one, for that matter), measure the distance from the butt of the rod to the top of the cork, and use that as a scale in the photos. I use millimeters in the photos, easier to do the math:

actual length of fish = length of fish in photo
actual length of rod handle length of rod handle in photo

or length of fish = length of fish in photo X actual length of rod handle
length of rod handle in photo

so for instance…

if the fish in the picture is 60 mm long
and the actual length of the rod handle is 12"
and the length of the rod handle in the photo is 24mm

then you get

fish (in inches) = (60mm X 12") / 24mm

the mm units cancel out, do some math, you end with 30".

Happy steelheading. You’re ruined for the rest of your life, you know.

ya i will next time. I fought him for like 5 min or so and wanted to get him back asap sO i quickly grabbed the cam a took a few pix with all the adrenaline in my veins haha. .

Congratulations on ONE NICE FISH !!

A tip for a quick measurement of a fish without a photo to refer to.

Measure from the tip of your fingers to the inside of your elbow joint, and then to the upper end of your arm. To get a quick read on the size of a fish, lay it on your outstretched hand and arm. ( For some reason, most trout will lay very still when laid on their side on your arm. ) For me, the first measurement is 17", and second is 24". I been close a number of times, but haven’t hit the shoulder yet.

That steelhead you got almost surely goes more than 22", and maybe more than 24"
