What do you guys keep in the big pockets on the back of your vest? Ill start… a half roll of TP and a self contained rain jacket.
I gave up on carrying TP! Ever tried to use it once it got WET??? I carry paper towels folded and inside a zip lock bag instead. They have “wet strength”…
I haven’t worn a vest for about 6 years now. I use a chest pack and take along a daypack that I usually leave on shore which contains drink, food and a rain jacket.
Kelly.
Baby Wipes instead of TP (yes mine is as soft as a baby’s) & 2 zip-lock bags (one for “new” and one for “used”). Rain jacket, too.
Regards,
Scott
I rarely use them as my vest stays pretty light. There is usually a bottle of bug dope in one and spare garbage bags in the other.
Sunscreen/bug spray in one pocket.
The other pocket is used for a variety of items… either a water bottle or my rain jacket depending on the forecast.
One question i have for westerners… where do u find it most comfortable, yet easily accessible to carry bear spray??
Paul
i dont carry spray i carry lead, the zip pocket of MY left side on my chest (im rite handed)
Never hit the river without my TP, candy bars and crackers all in zip-lock bags many times my sugar drops and I need a quick pick me up. Now for the TP that would be a quick wipe me up. :D
Often a beer
Sometimes a fish
Bears? Give them the fish!
I don’t carry bear spray. In better than 45 years of wandering the Colorado and Wyoming high country, I have seen exactly two bears. One digging through my campfire when I was stupid enough to throw garbage in the fire the night before, and the other across the lake from me doing the same thing I was, fishing.
The first one led to a real exciting 30 seconds and set of hearing aids 40 years later. The second one looked at me as if to ask. “Having any luck? Nope, me either.”
Bear spray is clipped to my belt.
Yes it gets wet when I wade, but I (usually) remember to dry it out at the end of the day (or weekend)
I often don’t wear a vest, so nippers and tippets are on a lanyard thingy, forceps are clipped to my waders.
I actually never carried spray before, but Lili wants me to and we had a couple bears on the beach of the #37 all season
air
i dont put nuthin back there
You mean you don’t carry a peanut butter and jelly sammich back there?
I thought every real fly fisher carried at least one peanut butter and jelly sammich on the stream. I think it might be the law or sumthin.
I am diabetic so I carry at least a bottle of water, a peanut butter and jelly sammich with a couple of ice packs and some fruit like an apple. Also paper towels.
If I am hiking I put my camera gear in it. Works good for that too.
I was born on the west side of Cincinnati…do I qualify as a “westerner”?
I carry my “bear spray” on my right hip…right behind my handgun!
I am also…I carry water; a can of Pepsi…the high octane stuff; root beer barrels and those candy “orange slices”.
If its hot, I put a frozen bottle of water back there. That helps cool you off and gives you a drink everyonce in a while too. If it’s cold I don’t use it.
Nighthawk,
I am not fond of Jelly or Jam.
I make up my own peanut butter mix. I use Skippy Super Chunk, maybe a teaspoon of butter…although most of the time I leave that out…
Dip out 3-4 heaping tablespoons of peanut butter into a cereal bowl.
Pour Karo Clear Corn Syrup in and stir till I like it. Put just enough in a slice of bread and fold it over on top of itself. Then another…and maybe even another. Put in a ziplok bag. Keeps well while out fishing…as opposed to a slice of salami…on a hot day in the sun.
Can pull one out and eat it like a hot dog…and the crunching of the nuts as you eat I think gives your mind a feeling that you really ate something. Then a diet Pepsi.
They tell me I am not diabetic. But I think I must be borderline because I get the sugar bounces. A sandwich, a payday, and a pepsi always cures it if I am on the road.
I bought my own glucose checker and I test ok.
Oh…one of the great syrups to use in the peanut butter mix is hard to find…but the best Karo has. For years it has been unavailable in Phoenix or San Francisco. Unbelievable what a market they are missing. The “Pankcake Syrup” with the green label and it has maple syrup in it. I had to stop that one because it brings on the shakes. It would probably be ok in the peanut butter sandwich. But I can only get it if I order online by the case. And discovered when I have it on pancakes or waffles I tend to get the sugar bounces. So I switched to the Karo clear for my peanut butter sandwiches…and don’t eat pancakes or waffles anymore at all. Both the Karo Pancake and Corn syrups are good mixed with peanut butter. Probably a lot of other syrups work just as well. Pick your favorite.
At home if I get too hungry and have nothing…I go to “Gemrod’s Peanut Butter” <grin>
I don’t bother with the bread. I mix it in a bowl and go set down and spoon it out and eat it with a Pepsi and watch tv. It stops the hunger feeling, I think because it is filling and the pshchological effect that you have indeed eaten something because of chewing up the peanut chunks.
Just fyi
Usually nothing.
If gray skies: a rain jacket.
If exceptionally hot: a water bottle.
If one certain buddy of mine is coming along: a thermos of coffee, regardless of temperature.
I use a chest pack with a backpack for steelheading, and in the backpack I keep: a heavy cord stringer, rain jacket, some type of drink, knife, and some type of snack, ranging from sunflower seeds, to pizza, to a 12" sandwich.
I’m definitely a westerner…
I never did carry nothin in those back pockets when I used a vest. The year I stopped using a vest I bought a new mesh one from Cabela’s and liked it a lot, but I just had too much stuff I never used much. Now I go minimal with a little modified chest pack I rigged on a sling strap to carry over one shoulder like a shoulder bag. It’s quite small and has tippet, floatant, sinket, leaders, nips, a sharp knife, two small fly boxes in it. I have another like it, a modified Filson waist pack set up the same way, if I need more stuff. I also carry a couple folded half gallon ziplocks in my pants pocket, and a couple paper towels for “theraputic papers” If I’ll be away from base for very long, I’ll also carry a small soulder bag with a PB&J, some jerky and a Diet Pepsi My .357 mag bear spray is in a paddle holster at the small of my back, with a speedloader in my shoulder pack, and my wading staff is in my hand…ModocDan
Depends on the day. I was never a huge fan of vests. I used a single small pouch. About 18 months ago, I broke down and purchased a vest that I though I could work with. I wanted something I could throw my rain jacket in and because of health issues, I now need to keep food and drink in there + Bug dope on occation. The TP goes into my inside wader pocket.
Sometime I like to have the option of switching up fly lines so I may have a reel spool in there as well. I still try not to take too much, keeping it as light as possible.
If I know I’m fishing for less than three hours and the weather is nice…I leave the vest behind.
