–Have a couple of the A4 type boxes, Mine are a little flimsy but only cost a buck each. A couple of pieces of self-sticky 2mm craft foam on one side (trimmed to fit) and they are GREAT for lager flies, but not real durable.
–Also found a clear box that is just the size of the “bugger barn” at Hobby Lobby. For the insides, I had a couple sheets of dense foam that I’d bought at Bed bath and Beyond (they were placemats) for making poppers out of. I was able to slice them at 1/2 inch intervals (not the entire length of course) and then glue them in the box. Also works well. Cheaper than a bugger barn. but a lot more hassle. I enjoyed the do-to-yourself aspect, others might not.
I found one at another local Academy. I got the boat patches in, they were backordered of course. I made one case, and thought I needed two patches…lol…well one patch was enough. I love the box. The only thing is some of my flies want to fall out of their spot, but most hold fine. The heavier flies I think are the ones that slip out. Still it is a great box, cheap, and holds many bass flies. All in all I love the box. I plan to make another, as this one is full. You can’t go wrong with this style of box, and it is sturdy.
Which size of the slit foam fits the Plano pistol case I wonder. Next time I make a new box I will try some of that stuff. It will be a while, because I already made up a spare box, and it has the boat foam in it.
Kel, Based on the size of the XXL Pacific, you would need the XXL size foam and trim as needed. but at $14 each for the foam? 2 pieces plus the Plano box, you’re looking at about $35 at least. Not really a good deal on a homemade box if you ask me. unless you really want the slit foam. Now if one could find a boat patch (plain rectangle liek the MillStream) of the slit foam instead of precut for the Bears Den cases, a homemade box would liekly be much cheaper.
Another type of foam that could be used …is the tubular style weather stripping that goes around doors…self adhesive…mine was quite old and the adhesive didn’t hold but new might and it can certainly be fixed with contact glue…I just haven’t gotten around to it.
