Big Fly-Fly Box

Cliff’s Bugger Beast measures 13.5" X 9" X 3" and the Bugger Beast Jr. measures 10" X 6.5" X 2.75" and is made of rigid yellow plastic with dual sliding locks on both sides of the handle. $44.95 and $39.95 respectively.

Here’s my version for about for $15

Ripple foam boat patch $10

Plano pistol case $4.95

Egg shell foam lifts right out

Boat patch is perfect size.

Use egg shell foam as a template to cut ripple foam inserts.

Just peel and stick ripple foam inserts.

Ripple foam fits like a glove.

Loaded with flies

It may be my frugal eye sight , but I see no difference in the two boxes. Good job and great idea.

Nice! I have been looking to get something to store bass flies and just couldn’t rationalize the bugger barn prices. Well done!

Now if I can just find a boat patch, fly fishing stuff is tough to come by around here

Great idea… I’m off to the big C to pick up the stuff. I’ll use it for my saltwater stuff…

excellent tutorial…great idea…now where do you get that boat patch?

search online for “millstream boat patch”

well except that the cliff boxes have slit foam for fly storage and yer using ripple…
nevertheless you did a great job w/ that knock off.

I like my bugger beast junior and didn’t pay a cent for it.

Ingenious! I love it. Thanks

That is a great idea (I wouldn’t call it a knock off ). Does anybody know if this “nubby tack” can be found under a different name? That is great material for mid and large size flies.

just buy thicker foam a cut slits into it

great tutorial, roger!!

I bought the boat patch at http://www.madriveroutfitters.com/p-2490-big-ripple-boat-patch-foam.aspx

the slit foam is probably part of why the Buggers cost so much. That’s nice foam (as is the nub type foam) but I’ve never seen either available commercially in large pieces. By all means if anyone finds that, please post the resource.

Mr. Blur, free is ALWAYS good!

What is wrong with using the egg shell foam that comes with the case?

If you’re just laying large flies in there, that would indeed work, but they would be prone to spilling every time you open the box. And unless all your hooks barb-less, the barbs can snag the foam, tearing and ripping it. Pretty much the same reason they don’t use that type of foam in any fly box.

I went and picked up a couple of the pistol cases today, I have some big sheets of 6mm closed cell foam, I think I will try to cut that and see how it works. A little rubber cement outta hold it in!

and if it’s important for yours to be yellow, buy a DeWalt Accessory Case at Lowes for ~$6

Item #: 192660 Model: DW2190

Was shopping at my local Gender Mountain yesterday and saw a box for trolling spoons for about 15 bucks. The top was clear and it had foam to hold the spoons on one side. thick foam with slots in it. I will see if I can get a picture of it.

Roy

SMClark, the color is not important to me, but I do like that box. About how big is that? 6x10 or so?

Over here i use an a4 tuff box

If you just put foam on one side then it lets you see in the box witout opening it.

seriously, now, how many fly boxes have a 1-year warranty !

went to “Gender Mountain” to see Roy’s Spoon box, and stumbled across a Clearance Sale on ‘Flambeau Tuff Tainers with Zerust Protection’
