CLEAR LAKE CALIFORNIA.
Does anyone have any fishing experience HERE??
Anybody ever caught a Largemouth Bass on a fly?
Clear Lake looks like a great Bass lake.
300 miles north of San Fran.
The state record is 17 ponds.
Let me know if you have fished there and what you thought of it.
Thanks,
Doug
Are you asking if we have caught Bass on a fly anywhere, or just at this lake?
Someone caught a whole pond?
Must have been using WD40.
I fish alot of largemouth bass on the fly. I use mostly top water mouse imitations and poppers. Also, some crawfish patterns. It’s a hoot and a great way to spend a couple of hours in a float tube. That’s strictly pond fishing for me with the bucketmouths.
I also fish for smallmouth in the tribs alot during the spawn. For them, I’m strictly a clouser fisherman. On good nights, I can catch 12-16 per hour. It’s a ball on the 5 weight.
Doug,
Never fished Clear Lake, but have fished all over the southern California bass lakes with a fly rod.
The Clear Lake ‘record’ may be 17 pounds, but the California ‘state’ record is over 21. They’ve caught some HUGE bass from lakes like Miramar, Castaic, and Casitas (all lakes where the state stocks bass candy-otherwise known as rainbow trout).
Bass in the souhern California lakes are particularly vulnerable to fly fishing tactics, as they see these baits and techniques so infrequently. I’ve found that the Florida strain of largemouth seems to really respond to fly fishing tactics.
Give it a shot, you may find the next ‘world’ record?
Good Luck!
Buddy
There is more than one Clear Lake in Ca. If you’re speaking of Clear Lake in Lake County, it’s nowhere near 300 miles from S.F. However there is another Clear Lake nearer the Or border.
In any case, yes I’ve fished Clear Lake, in Lake County. Yes, I’ve caught Bass there on the fly.
Our Largemouth record as far as I know is 21 lbs. 12 oz.

I think Lee S. lives a little closer to Clear lake than I, maybe he’ll chime in.
Best, Dave
I fish lmb and smb here on flies Doug and I’ve seen Clear Lake, CA…it’s huge and a very popular bass lake.
Cheers,

I assume that the Clear Lake near the Oregon border is the one in Modoc county ESE of Tule Lake, CA. If so, be advised that it is a National Wildlife Refuge and closed to fishing.

Gramps! WAKE UP! You were having a DREAM!
Doug
Nearer, than Lake County. I was thinking more along the lines of Siskiyou County. I think there’s another in Humboldt County too.

I went to TopoZone and entered Clear Lake. There are nine Clear Lakes in California. Perhaps we should jump on Dougie and tell him to a little more “CLEAR” in his request.
Tim
The Calif lakes with the large bass are stocked with trout for bass food. Many of the large bass are caught on large plastic baits in the shape and color of trout. Tie up some large tube flies and troll.
350 miles NORTH of SF and it’s one of or the biggest fresh water lake in California.
AND… it has BASS, BASS and more BASS!

Clear lake is anything but clear. It is more like a sesspool but it has some huge bass and crappie in it. It is a shallow lake so you can fish it year’round. I have only driven past but I have a lot of friends who fish it with conventional gear and do very very well.
Saw TV program on those…the large silicone [soft] baits do indeed look like real rainbows and are at least 12" long.
Doug,
Seriously, which one are you asking about? How about the county?
Re: “350 miles NORTH of SF and it’s one of or the biggest fresh water lake in California.”
What is that in reference to? Something you read, saw on T.V., what?
That could be true of the one in lake county - but it’s about 130-140 from S.F.
Thanks, Dave
Well, I am just glad he clearified the “Catching bass on flies” to a particular body of water.
I would hate to have to post that picture from the other post again…I am not sure Gramps could handle it
Dave,
If you don’t know which Clear Lake I’m talking about, then I’m in REAL trouble!
It’s hard to imagine living in California, because Oregon is much smaller.
All I know is 350 miles North of San Francisco, you have to drive on winding roads to get there, it is kind of in the middle of nowhere.
When I saw the location, I was surprised it wasn’t near Lake Casitas, in the southern part of Cal.
Doug P.S. I think I opened a can of worms.
Bait fisher…
Hey Doug,
Re: “you have to drive on winding roads to get there”
You should’ve mentioned that sooner - and now the distance reference, starting from San Francisco makes sense.
Best, Dave
