Fellow FAOL warriors, the search for ?THE FAOL BEST BIG BASS FLIES? is over!! However as a novice, I?ve discovered that the journey has just begun!! I have yet to reach the final conquest. The focus has now turned toward food sources in the lake, lake cover, lighting, and exactly how the fish are feeding. ?THE FAOL BEST BIG BASS FLIES" will evidently vary based on these issues, as posted by FAOL member, ?RawThumb?, in ?BIG BASS -Part 2, Revenge of the Novice?. Now the question is what BIG BASS flies best suit the following conditions?
CONDITION #1 - Fish are breaking the surface.
CONDITION #2A - Fish are not breaking the surface, and need a noisy or bothersome fly to induce them.
CONDITION #2B ? Fish are not breaking the surface and just need fly that is fished subsurface.
CONDITION #3 - Lighting:
For example, ?Long Hair?s? post in ?BIG BASS -Part 2, Revenge of the Novice? stated that Dahlberg Divers are for after dark.
CONDITION #4 ? Cover:
Those BIG BASS won?t taunt me much longer. The mission continues.
You realize that with all this advice you are getting, you have to uphold the honor of FAOL. If you fail, we all fail. The laughing bass have won; they have virtually defeated us all.
At this time of year I would start with as big surface poppers. I tie Gurgle Pops on a #2 hook or a Crease Fly on a 2/0 stainless hook. I would start with a very slow retrieve and vary speeds if the slow retrieve fails to work.
If the surface stuff doesn’t interest the merry bass, I would switch to a big, weighted Wooly Bugger #4-#2 or a big Clouser #2-#1/0. I would work them progressively deeper until I was scraping the bottom.
If two hours go by and you don’t have a fish, fall on your sword. 8T
You had better learn to be a happy camper. You only get one try at this campground and it’s a real short camping season.
LISTEN, I DO NOT WANT CHARITY, but I would like to buy some of those flies you use. I have never heard of a Gurgle Pop or a Crease Fly. If you would be kind enough to tie me a few, I will GLADLY pay!! I can get the Wooly Buggers, and I have some Clousers. They are greenish and white. Let me know and I can send you my snail mail address.
If you send me your name and snail mail address either by email or in a follow-up post, I would gladly send you 5 or 6 of my best. No charge. We all help each other on this board. Once you see what these flies look like, you should be able to duplicate them. They are pretty easy to tie. The only danger involves the Zap-a-gap on the Crease Flies. I’ll wait for your address and get some flies off bright and early on Monday. 8T
Oh I don’t mean to say that Dahlbergs are only for low-light. They are just an awesome topwater bass fly. My thoughts on the divers in the dark relates to bass in clear water that appear to look at you during the day. Fishing a diver after dark will attract some violent explosions (usually) and the upside is the bass don’t see you.
