Being a newbie myself I find a variety of mags are my best bet it definitly cost more than a subsciption. I get fly fishing america, fly fisherman, and fly fishing and tying journal. I am actually going to subscibe to all of them they all have good arcticles to learn from. For example, the may 2006 edition of fly fisherman had an article on visual nymphing and it definitly helped improve my fishing. I usually just get them at walmart or wherever, see which one(s) have articles that peak my intrest and get them, but I definitly think a subscription to all of them is coming.
Good luck

P.S. Feel free to email me and we can compare some notes being both newbies. My email is in my profile.

I think you are posting on the BEST Fly Fishing magazine going. There are at least 4 new articles to read each WEEK and the archives are full of all the info that a new fly fisher could ask for and there is no monthly cost. Other than FAOL, the only other magazine I get is Fly Tyer and it is for my fly tying info.
I think, if you will research FAOL archives, you will not need any other magazines plus you will not have to sort through a lot of advertisements. If you need supplies just look at the Sponsor page.

Hi Mark
This is one of those questions which will eventually get positive and negative reponses for every magazine out there. Before I give you my answer(s), let me tell you that I have a bias in my selection—I don’t like magazines that are chock full of travel stories about places that I can’t afford to fish or have no desire to fish. That being said, I have three favorites.
I would rate Flyfishing and Tying Journal as my all time favorite for useful information.
For just fly tying stuff, you can’t beat Fly Tyer. Lots of good stuff here.
American Angler is is also worth reading and contains lots of good info.
I subscribe to 10-12 fishing magazines but these are my three top choices. 8T
You had better learn to be a happy camper. You only get one try at this campground and it’s a real short camping season.
I understand where MarkF may be coming from. Yes, FAOL is the best mag but what about sitting in the airport, waiting for a plane? And I don’t think the other-half would think much of lugging a laptop into the throne room for some “reading material”.
Sometime a slick magazine is nice to have. I still like the old stand by “FlyFisherman” and when Sharon is at the doctors office, I can put the seat back in the truck and read a magazine. I suppose you could always print out FAOL, but that would cost more in toner than a magzine subscription. Good luck, Jonezee
Over the years I have subscribed to just about every ffing mag there is at one time or another.
I found most of them to be just thinly disguised ads.
I have not bought or subscribed to any of um for 10 years, since I got a computer. Every thing I want to look up, read or find out about is all right here on the internet.
They all tend to be similar, but I favor two, FFTJ and CFF. That they are loaded with add’s is not a bad thing. Often that is where the information you are after is. The magazines greatest value is that they may help keep you focused and involved in fly fishing, that is a good thing.
I’m with WarrenP. Especially if what you have in your backyard is warmwater fly angling. If so, do what many of us have done and send your $25 bucks to FAOL. This is the best magazine going, and even better, it’s a weekly not a bi-monthly. JGW
I am lost, what is the $25 to FAOL? Can you subscribe here? Sounds dumb since you said you can, I mustta missed that!
Thanks and Gig’em

MarkF:
The bad news is:
There are plenty of mags; some good, some bad and the recommendations given by others are excellent. You may have to subscribe to several to find YOUR favorites.
The good news is:
After about a year or so they all repeat themselves. So in a few years after the gazillionth article on Hendricksons, Sulphurs, Green Drakes, Tricos, double-hauling, etc, etc, etc…
…you’ll cancel most of your subscriptions, narrow it down to one or two and visit FAOL daily.
MarkF,
“I am lost, what is the $25 to FAOL? Can you subscribe here? Sounds dumb since you said you can, I mustta missed that!”
For $25 you can become a Friend of FAOL. The link is on the menu on the left.

CFF?

In my part of the world, CFF is California Fly Fisher. Marginally useful to someone in Texas like Mark F.
