Best A. K. Best book

HI
I am thinking about bying one of AK Best’s books and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on which one to buy.

I do tie flies and fish a lot of mountain water if that affects an opinion

Ask him! A.K., What would you say?

All of them!

Allstar,

Unlike many authors who publish one good book and then five or six volumes of junk, A.K.s books are all worthy of a place on any fly tyer’s book shelf. I can’t name one A.K. book that I would want to part with. That being said, I particularly like "Fly Fishing with A.K. and A.K. Best’s Advanced Fly Tying 8T

Allstar,

Buy them all.

But, if you only can get one, and you are really into improvig your tying skills, get his ‘Production’ book.

Good Luck!

Buddy

I agree with everyone else, they are all exceptional books. A.K. is my favorite fly tyer. If you have to pick just one, I’d recommend “Production Fly Tying”. It covers everything from tool & vise selection and modification to tying in the various parts that make up the fly; tail, wings, body, etc. It also offers invaluable tips that will make anyone a better tyer.

Thanks for all the help. Looks like I may be getting more than one now.

production fly tying and dying and bleaching are the ones I learned the most from. ak’s flybox is great as well… heck, jes get em all

So if one was to start with 1 of AK’s books, which would it be?

production fly tying

redacted…

If I can only get one book, I would have to pick Advanced Fly Tying. I know that Production Fly Tying has lots of fans but I have no interest in tying fasting. I enjoy being able to take my time and get things just right. Advanced Fly Tying also has some great advice on the perennial cape vs saddle question. 8T

I have most of his books and I find them all useful. Which book depends on what you want to learn, each of his titles cover different topics. Two of my favorites are…

While I am not a production tyer in any way, I found ‘Production Fly Tying’ had lots of tips that increased both the quality and efficiancy of my tying. Now I can tie a few dozen in an evening instead of just 6.

I also like 'A.K.‘s Flybox’ It has lots of patterns with a few step by step examples as an appendix. Many pictures of naturals and of well tied pattern’s.

i have to agree with kengore–my foavrite is the Flybox for right now–next week maybe Production–go to amazon or a similar site and preview–or better yet if you are forced to leave and not tye go to the closest bookstore with these publications and skim them
