Berkley Hat Auction

Thanks to all who have participated in the signing of the Berkley Hat project. What started out as a fluke has turned into a very fun project that has brought more than its fair share of laughs, not to mention a thread that has run 7 months and with 390 replies and more than 10,300 page views. We have reached the end of interest in signing the hat, so it’s time that we follow through with our original intent to auction off the hat and its accompanying goodies.

The hat and its accompanying sun shade (made by Jean DeSavage, aka sewsdrapes) have approximately 55 names of FAOL members inscribed on them, and also possess memorial pins from the Michigan Fish-In (Northern Pirates), Wyoming, North Coast Fly Fishers from the Island Nation of Ohio, a Heinz ketchup bottle and pickle, and a great frog pattern tied by HRH Betty Hiner. There is also a box of assorted flies tied by Doug Lind and other FAOL Members, three furled leaders (probably from Jack & Brad), one tapered leader 9’-0" lg. x 6X, a laminated pocket fly fisherman’s knot guide, and lastly, two beautiful custom made bodkins made by modocdan, one with a Honduras Mahogany handle and the other with a stacked Micarta disc handle. Excellent craftsmanship from a generous FAOL member. Pictures of all the items are shown below.

These items will all go as one lot to the high bidder in this auction, with 100% of the proceeds going to towards the operational cost of the FAOL website. All bids will be kept anonymous and must be e-mailed to flybinder (Paul Wilmoth) at flybinder@flybinder.com. Paul will post the high bid each day, as well as the number of bidders participating each day. If you are outbid, you can increase your bid by sending Paul another e-mail.

The auction will last for 30 days so everyone has a chance to bid. Bids will be accepted until midnight, August 17, 2008. The winning bidder will be notified by e-mail the following day, and will make payment directly to FAOL at their address. Once the payment has been received by FAOL, the hat and all listed items will be shipped via USPS Priority Mail to the winning bidder in the continental US, or by ordinary mail to international bidders. Payment is to be made by check or money order in US Dollars.

Here’s some pics of the items:

If you have any questions feel free to PM me or leave it on the BB and one of us will answer it for you.

Happy Bidding!

Joe & Paul

We have enjoyed the journey the hat has made back and forth across this great country, and look forward to your participation in the auction. As the winning bidder, you will have the option of having your name listed as such, or to remain anonymous.

Thanks, again, for your support, and happy bidding.

Joe

Not mentioned in Oven God’s, very excellent description of the auction above, we will also send the winning bidder of this auction; the “Official” crumpled up newspaper, (also shown in Oven God’s photos), so you can forever keep this one of a kind treasure in premium display shape!
Happy Bidding!

oops, sorry, i dont’ read so good…i’ll look for the post every day!!

Ok! Know I know where I put that “Pickle and Bottle” maybe I took Pauls Meds?

What happened to the old ****'s medicine bag, did someone in Michigan take it???
Drew

The medicine bag was a personal gift to the boss and his Mrs. Therefore, they extracted it for their personal use and benefit. Cute touch with some of those items from the Rx. I’m certain they were thrilled with all those “personal items.”:p:p

Joe

To further entice you, into bidding on this rare and obviously valuable hat and assorted “accessories”, Namekagon, (Nam)…(out of either a devious sense of humor, and/or, the kindness of his heart), wishing to make this auction a great success, has thrown in his very own, highly prized, “Singing Trout”!
I’m sure, after hearing several of these “singing fish species” myself many times, Nam is making a HUGE, personal sacrifice, by donating his to this auction.
(The “Singing Trout”, is brand new and still in its original packaging)
Thank you, Nam!

Cool!
I’ll post a photo soon!
On e-bay it’d be worth a fortune guys…20 yrs from now… maybe more than that!

Joe -

Can you make this a “STICKY” so it stays at the top of the SOUND OFF Forum?

Thanks…

It’s sort of silly to me, to auction off some beautifully tied flies and expertly crafted furled leaders and yet, not to offer at least PART of an outfit to use them with!
So, just to make things a bit more “interesting”, I’m going to also throw in a barely used, but highly cared for… STH fly reel. Model #MRPOP-#3 with two cassettes.
With the historical hat, alone, not to mention all the extras we’ve listed that comes with it, PLUS that lovely, (some day valuable) “Singing Trout” and finally a quality fly reel, all for the winnning bidder to walk away with, what will you bid?
Already, today, someone is going to get it all for only $10.00!??!

I have a new system that won’t take my camera right now…I’ll figure it out…but flybinder is underestimating my affection for the singing trout,it’s been on my bench for 5 yrs and I’ll miss it!
Not to be outdone by the guy…I’ll throw in a Redington FSF 9072 9’ #7…the 1st rod I spent more than $200 for…it’s almost pristine…if the bidding goes beyond $150 it’s yours!. No COD boys…I’ll do the postage and charge flybinder…but only for one of his hand tied. :p.

Methinks things will start to get interesting here with all the additional goodies being thrown in. Current value of the rod and reel alone is at $280, not including the beautiful custom made bodkins from modocdan. Those have to be worth $20 or more each, which put the value at $320. The 7wt and MR-POP 3 are a great outfit for Steelhead. I have all three of the STH MR-POP reels, and they are a superb value for the money.

The opening bid is only at $10? Good thing this will run for 30 days.

Joe

BTW, I cannot make anything a sticky. One of the Moderators has to do that with their magical keys to the kingdom.

WOWZERS! "Leave your pooter, only long enough to…

Anyway, in the event this auction, comments, etc. become longer than one page…
I will keep current highest bidder, still posted in the original post above to make it easier for bidders to find and keep track of. (Post #7)

Amazing! I git busy doing “Honey Do’s” for Mama this weekend, and didn’t realize my fellow countryman Ohiofly has moved up the bidding to a serious level. And they say nothing good can come from the Island Nation of Ohio!?!?!?

Joe

We have broken the “$150.00 level” in bidding so the fly rod, (offered so very generously by (nam), Namekagon)_ is now part of the package!

Here it is Paul…but I’m not sure generosity had much to do with it. :stuck_out_tongue:

As can be seen by the cork soiling…it’s been used very little.

Beautiful fly rod, nam. thanks so much.

$250 is the high bid so far!!! Amazing. It’s great to see the bidding climbing each day, thanks to the added incentives. Yes, this is a very generous group of fly flingers.

Joe

Don’t forget!! The bidding is also, only in $1.00 increments, so even at the $325.00 mark, the bid’s at now… you can still bid only a dollar more and win it! ($326.00)!?!

QUICK JOE!! Add a few cans of “Spam” HELL add a case of your “Special Rserve”
