Beginner materials

Everyone has their favorite patterns for the fish they target. For warmwater fly-fishing, you can catch a LOT of fish on fairly simple flies.
Woolly Buggers are very versatile…you can vary the color, size, and weight to cover a LOT of situations to attract species that are feeding on nymphs, minnows, leeches, etc.
Even more simple is a variation on the Daedalian Damsel pattern…where you tie in a marabou tail, then palmer the rest of the marabou up the hook shank.

So…important basic materials (other than #10 and #8 nymph & streamer hooks) are a variety of colors of marabou, yarn/chenille, and hackle feathers. The hackle feather colors I use most often are Grizzly, Black, and Brown.
The threads I use most are 6/0 Uni Thread in Black, White, Rust (Burnt Orange), and bright orange.
