Beauty and the Beast

Well,
let me show you the Beauty.

inside of Beauty

Now the Beast

Close-up of the Beast, see the yellowing of the fiberglass, well it is time to sand down and
re-apply the glass.
I do not think it will be as thick this time.

Here is the front of the Beast

I already started sanding and have a date around
Jan, 22 to take to the glass man.
I think he will do a better job then me since he does fiberglass every day.
Will take photo’s along the way.

Can you tell me a little about the beauty. Is it a fairly new craftman product or an older production boat that used to have a canvas cover? I get signals that lead me both ways. Whatever, I like it and look forward to seeing the final product.

David

Both canoes are 16 ft and as you can see the Beast is a square back.
The Beauty was purchased new in New York.
The Beast was also in Neew York, but used

The Beauty has very light glass layer on the out side and only varnish on the inside.
It is put together with brass nails through the ribbing that are filed smooth
I varnish the inside and outside every year.
It is a very smooth paddling canoe that I take to the local mountains. We are very carefull were we launch her.
Would put the weight around 35lbs

The Beast has a very thick fiberglass coat.
We have hit a few rocks in it with out damage. The inside has no ribbing and is very smooth.
There is also very thick fiberglass layer on the inside.
Would put the weight around 75 lbs

It does paddle fine but not as smooth as the Beauty,
but with the help of a electric trolling motor we travel upstream fine.
I bought it so the kids could beat it up and not the Beauty.
Now the kids are older I want to get the Beast back in shape.
Since I have owned it,it has had the yellow fiberglass over the wood.
I will sand on the Beast every weekend while I am at home, so to get it ready for the fiberglass man. Do not know how the Beast was put together since there is no nails or ribbing that I can see.
Will do the out side first the the inside.
From what I can see it should be a fine looking canoe once done.
Then we will have to think of another name for it.

Beautiful deck on the Beast. I’m envious. JGW

Should have most sanded with the long weekend comming up.
Will post photo’s of progress real soon.

I’d like to see a top view of the Beast. The stern looks very narrow and in the pictures it makes the whole canoe look really narrow,to me. My cousins had a canoe that looked similar to the beast when I was a kid. It was so tippy that we spent more time in the water than aboard the canoe.

Canoes don’t tip people; people tip people!

I tip my hat to your patience with the maintenance process these two beasties must require. They are both beautiful.

Strippers (wood strip canoes) are seemingly less stable than their cousins. That is a matter of physics, for as you near the water line they become much more stable. I would never stand to fish from a canoe. I’ve taught myself to cast adequately in a sitting position. We’ve had two of us fly casting and the biggest problem is not noticing where the other is in the casting motion. In other words, tangled lines. Oh, you’ve gotta watch where the Clousers are going. Somehow folks get bit worked up when hit a time or two with them. That can happen whether you’re sitting or standing. JGW

I am not at home at the time.
The beast is very stable.
Here she is in the water.

Will get more photos and measure her for you.

Since you are re-glassing: I finished building a stripper in sept. and some of the resin (where it was applied thick) is already starting to cloud and yellow. This is because there is a different hardener intended for clear finishes. We managed to miss that fact until after the boat was done. This may be a brand-specific thing (we used West System) but you might want to ask your glass man about it.

Thanks,
As I never knew this and will keep it in mind.

That is a great picture. The boys look great in their colorful Sospenders. Nothing photographs better than a cold clear lake with mountains in the background. I assume you are the paddler. BTW what color are your Sospenders?

I sure hope so! With two healthy energetic kids like that…

Bear,
There sospendes  are there life jackets and mine is on the floor in front of me.
As for paddling, it is me 90% of the time.
But, the Beast has a little trolling motor I use now and then to give me a break when we are trolling.

This is June Lake of Mammouth Mountain, Ca.
Love it there as we spend a few weeks there each year.
