Bear Hair

Went to both sporting good stores in Joplin Mo today hunting for bear hair. I am wanting to tie the CArey Special.
Was wondering if moose hair would work.
BillMc

there is some at feather craft.

One of the original Carey Special recipes calls for Ringed-neck pheasant tail fibers, deer hair or marmot fur…no bear.

I don’t know how the Bear hunting is in Kansas, but I went to a Taxidermist here in Montana and There was a ton of Black Bear fur. Taxidermists are a great source! Scott

Hi if unable to find any email me I have a box full be more than willing to share or trade.

All of the patteren’s for the Carey Special, call for pheasant rump feather for both tail/underbody and as the collar wraps.

Where does bear hair come into play on your perticular version?

Just a patteren buff, and I like seeing/finding new version’s of old patterens wherever and however I can.

“I’ve often wondered why it is that so many anglers spend so much money on,and pay so much attention to.the details on the wrong end of the fly line.If they took as much care in selecting or tying their flies as they did in the selection of the reel and rod,They might be able to gain the real extra edge that makes it possible to fool a fish that has,in fact, seen it all before” A.K.Best

“Wish ya great fishing”

I found the pattern in Jack Dennis’s book:
Tying Flies pg 32 if I remember right.

BillMc,
You have mail.

Hi Bill,

Unless you are a stickler for authenticity, I would feel free to make a substitution and not worry about it. I interchange materials all the time and the fish don’t seem to mind a bit. I will often change materials as I tie the fly in a larger or smaller sizes, sometimes even alternating between natural materials and artificial materials as needed. 8T

You had better learn to be a happy camper. You only get one try at this campground and it’s a real short camping season.

While we are on the topic of Black Bear hair, does anyone have a trick to remove the natural oils from the hair? The last bear hide given to me sooooooooo greasy, I salted it for 7 weeks to dry the skin, but the heavy oil still remains in the hair. 20 Mule Team Borax didn’t quite cut it.

Whenever I need to cut grease, I use DAWN dishwashing soap. It’s also the “wash” I use to kill the acid when I tan a hide. Remember to work the water out and break the hide and it will remain butter soft.

If you’ve got a friend with a black Lab. The fur is almost a dead match for bear. A couple of little snips from the tail and your in business. It’ll grow back you know!

Be the heron!
