I was just wondering if anyone could recommend a book on tying bass flies. Thanks for your help ahead of time.
Greetings AZ,
There are three good ones that have patterns from easy to advanced tying levels:
Flies for Bass and Panfish by Dick Stewart & Farrow Allen
Bass Flies by Dick Stewart
Tying Bass Flies 12 of the Best by Deke Meyer
A fourth book would be the Universal Flytying
Guide by Dick Stewart which has fly patterns for trout, panfish, bass and saltwater species as well.
All of the above books are available as paperbacks and should run under $20 apiece.
Be sure to check the fly archives of this site as well. My cicada fly is still working even though the critters have been gone a year.
All three books afore mentioned are excellent and all are on my desk DOG EARED.
gerri,
your cicada fly is great and they aint gone from here yet, loud and clear.
I’d go to the library and find Tom Nixon’s book. Lots of good bass flies and patterns. Also, Dave Whitlock’s bass book is good. JGW
If you’re looking for a book with lots of good bass patterns, then I second the recommendation for Flies for Bass and Panfish by Dick Stewart & Farrow Allen, great book. Keep in mind that this book will not show you how to tie any patterns, it does however provide and excellent photo of each pattern and give a list of materials. to learn tying techniques, the best book/CD I’ve ever seen is the Benchside Reference.

AZ,
I don’t think that the advise comes any better than Tom Nixon’s book on panfish and bass fishing. He was one of the first to come out with nontrout flies in 1968. The Calcasu Pigboat is still a number one bass fly. Try it, you’ll like it. 8T
You had better learn to be a happy camper. You only get one try at this campground and it’s a real short camping season.
If you have not already made your selection/purchase, you might also want to look at “Hot Bass Flies” by Deke Meyer. It focuses on Bass patterns and provides excellent photos and receipes for almost 250 bass flies. I have a copy and dug it out for something else and was amazed again by the variety of patterns and the quality of this book.
Lots of good books to choose from, good luck

If you want patterns AND want to know why you might need them and how to fish them, there is nothing better than Harry Murray’s Flyfishing for Smallmouth Bass.
Hey there is a classic called Bass Bug Fishing by William G. Tapply. Published by The Lyons Press.
I recommend it highly.
I get chills just thinking of a big Bass on a Fly.
Since this book doesn’t deal exclusively with flies, I didn’t mention it in my previous post but I think that Jack Ellis’ book, “Bassin’ with a Fly Rod” is must read for all bassers. It is totally different persepective on sport. Bass are not trout and Ellis is one of the first to point this out and to significantly modify his tactics. Great Book! 8T
