Bass are beginning to move

  1. The Bass are beginning to move in central Oklahoma. We had a pleasant morning warm water fly fishing. We caught 4 bass 5-7 lbs and a few nice crappie . Just enough to keep it interesing. Probaly would have been better in the afternoon , but there are these darn scedules. It was great to get out.

OK,

I am going to have to hire a PI to find where you are going! 5 to 7 pound bass, I got to get one of those…

Dan

  1. 3 years ago I caught one on a fly that was 10 lbs. although it was a different pond

insane… i have yet to see a bass more than 4 lbs up here in Chicago… cold weather must make them grow smaller along with too much fishing pressure

okflyfisher,

I need you to e-mail me your address, the PI said it would save a lot of time and money if he knew where to start! Or, just e-mail me a map of the pond(s) in question…

Dan

I was At American Horse on Monday in a Tube. I pulled in 13 between 3-5 lbs. Great Day!

Okflyfisher

What were you using?

Greg

I was using #12 olive wooly burgers with some flash on a sink tip line from a tube in the south coves.

8)We were using crayfish flies. Crayfish are thick in our waters. we have other flies that also work well for bass ,but are generally too big for crappie. The Crappie, Channel Cats, Carp and green sunfish all love the crayfish.

Hey OK, what size and color crwfish are you using? Does it depend on water color? Down here in SW OK water is not very clear, mostly stained to muddy.
thanx, CC

  1. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you I have not had time to get on line. We have a few ponds that area clear but most of our waters are stained to muddy. We use black crayfish most of the time and they seem to work well in clear or muddy. Our crayfish are almost orange when they molt and then their shell darkens. The clearer the water the more olive brown the crayfish appear.
The crayfish I tie are Juvenile crayfish with dyed sqirrel tail claws the overall fly is 2 inches long. This seems to be an excellent overall size and will catch most of our warm watrer species here it Ok.

While I think it is small for LM bass even the big bass seem to love it. The fly looks tiny in their gapping Maws

I sent some black ones to a friend of mine In Michigan and he pounded Carp in the clear waters of the Great Lakes with them

OKflyfisher,

How about posting a pic of the craw and recipe.

OKflyfisher,
I did ok weekend before last about 6, 6-12in LMB, black/white poppers vic FT Sill water levels still very low. Then we had a ton of rain since it was looking good for this weekend but I think this massive drop in temps this week have put lid on everything. What do you think?

:frowning:

  1. We got out on wednesday about 4 Pm to dark. The first wave of the cold front had gone through. The bass were not in the the shallow bays We had some fun along the damn which has deep water nearby. We caught two small bass 2-3lbs and from some nice crappies10-15 inches . The crappie were ahoot really sassy.Right at dark my buddy hooked a 20lb carp that dragged a 14’ boat around for 15 minutes. We have had much cold weather since so I would fish late in the day in areas that have close access to deeper water

More cold weather in Southwest Ok. Going to give a try Sunday anyway. 8)

  1. Sorry for the delay I am new at this

Recipe Juvenile crayfish:

Hook - Mustad 79580 #4
Lead Barbell - 1/60 oz
Body :3 ply black yarn (stronger than chenille)
Med Brass wire
Claws - black squirrel tail
Double weed guard - Mason Hard Type nylon (25 lb)
zap a gap dumbell and weed guard
overall length 2.1 inches
fly rides hook up

Tying Instructions:

Tie in lead barbells near eye of hook (Clouser style).
Make a small ball of yarn at back of hook.
Tie in clump of squirrel and split over yarn ball. Length =barbell to hook point
Under body:Tie in yarn building up( not wrapping) 1/2 of length on the top side of the hook opposite of hook gap.
Wrap yarn trapering to eye.
Counter wrap body with medium wire
Tie in double weed guard.

The only thing a little tricky to explain is the weed guard. Cut a semicircle of the Hard Mason. Pinch the center of the curve (curve down) with your left hand between index finger and thumb. With right hand, fold back both sides of the Mason (opposite the curve) so the two sides are parallel. Slip the loop formed over the eye and tie in behind the lead barbells.

Tie the crayfish on with a nonslip loop. A quicker strip will cause the fly to pivot on the dumbell, and the claws will rise up in a defensive position then the fly will slowly settle back down to a flat position. The fish will generally pick it up between strips.

Good Luck and HOLD ON!!!

This fly catches Bass, Channel Cat, Crappie(bigger), Green Sunfish, and Carp
