Barge cement for wading boots

The felt is finally coming off my wading boots. Other than this delamination, the rest of the boot is fine. From past posts, Barge Cement seems to be the adhesive of choice.

Where does one find Barge Cement??

Try Ace Hardware.

Do a Yahoo search for barge cement. Must be 15 places on the first page alone.

I have seen it at Home Depot, Lowe’s, Ace Hardware, Walmart, and Tandy Leather. It is available LOTS of places.

Make sure that both surfaces are CLEAN and let the cement dry completely before sticking things back together.

Bear in mind you get ONE shot to position it correctly. Once the cemented parts touch, that’s it. You can use a piece of paper (waxed is best) between the two surfaces to get them aligned and slip it out slowly to stick things together.

<Hummm … cement in your wading boots. Is that like putting rocks in your waders … for ballast?>

I don’t know, maybe you can find it online but I have struck out trying to find it locally the last couple of years. At one time you could get it in any hardware store. Now all they’ve got is this Shoe Goo stuff.

Shoe Goo is a good alternative to Barge and would probably work just as well. Barge is simply a high yield contact cement. Construction grade contact cement frim Home Depot or Lowe’s would work just as well.

I’d think Gorilla Glue would do fine also.

If you use the barge cement just don’t get near any barges…

I know Home Depot has that high grade contact cement. I used to buy it by the gallon for glueing “Formica” laminate down.

I had the same issue, took boots to local shoe repair guy, and he cemented them back on for $6. I mentioned barge cement to him and he knew what it was and used it.

Auto trim adhesive would work really well, too. Don’t know about polyurethane based glues like Gorilla Glue. It would bond to the felt, but it would depend on the material the boot was made of if it would stick to that and I am not sure it is flexible enough to last long.

Unfortunately I did the same thing and they came right off. Didn’t mention barge cement though.

FWIW, it looks like Murray’s Fly Shop sells tubes of barge cement.

Found mine at a couple of local shoe repair shops…hangs near the front counter with the other shoe stuff.

I have heard that the alternative products like Shoe Goo don’t work as well as Barge. I had to resort to Shoe Goo on my wading boots recently but I don’t have enough time on these yet to know if it will hold up well.
