Helping a friend out on this one.
She found this rod when she was cleaning the EX’s stuff out of the garage.
Montague.
1 MTTF MT.
Tom Fly 9’ Medium
3 joints and extra tip
paper tag is still on the grip
The rod has 3 cracked ferrules and needs at least one guide replaced. She would like to try to assign a value to it and if it is worth it she would like to refinish it.
The Mount Tom was a lower end production rod from the Montague Rod & Reel Company in Montague City, MA. They were the largest manufacturer of bamboo rods until they closed the factory in 1955 so it’s not exactly a rare rod. You mentioned the cracked ferrules, but how does the rest of the rod look? Even in really good shape I doubt you’d get more than $100. As far as refinishing…if you do it yourself, I always think a rod is worth refinishing if not just for practice. I just wouldn’t throw a lot of cash at that rod.
One thing you might want to consider ~~ try making the mid section and the two tips into a banty rod. With new ferrules, new guides, new wraps and a new reel seat you might have a very enjoyable short, light line rod. One word of caution ~~ try taping a reel on the bottom of the mid section and casting it with one of the tips to see if it is even worth it. Not every long rod makes a nice short rod.
