Bamboo Burl Grips

I’m getting ready to start a new fiberglass build and I came across some grips called bamboo burl. I’ve heard of cork burl before, but never bamboo burl. Has anyone here heard of such a critter? Cabela’s has them on sale for $9.99, here’s the link;

Joe, I had one of the bamboo burl grips before, and it does look really nice, and has a nice feel to it. It was the first grip I ever reamed, and I ended up destroying it by over zealous reaming. They are nice grips though.
I’m not sure if Pac Bay even carries them anymore, they are not listed in the 2008 price list that I saw.

They were on back-order. So, I bought the Fenwick style grip instead. Same price.

I bought 2 ofthem from Mud Hole tackle about a year ago. They look great but are a little brittle. I got the last 2 from Mud hole. they said they were discontinuing them. Makes me wonder if there was a supply problem. I thought they were a little too small in diameter.
If you want one I have one left.

Is it Full Wells & what would you want for it? I’ve decided on a different grip for my new build, but I’d be interested in playing with it.

They are a composite material - cork blended with various synthetics and bonding agents. More durable than natural cork AND less expensive … however, the finished product is usually 2.5 to 3.0 times heavier.

Pacific Bay still makes them in both Full Wells (7.5" length) and Reversed Half Wells (7.0" length) and both are 0.25" ID and 1.00" OD.

They are actually fairly inexpensive and quite a good value. As noted, composite cork is harder and you have to go slowly when reaming preformed grips. The end result can be quite striking if you apply U40 Cork Seal upon completion. Just bear in mind that the grips are heavier than a traditional natural cork.

Joe it’s a reverse half wells but does not come to a complete taper in the front. It’s more squared off. The dia. is only 1". I think I paid $8.00 for it. Pm me if you are interested.

Can I trade something for it? I just want to experiment and find out what they’re all about. Or maybe I could just mail you $8.00? +postage.

I’ve used a few of them from Cabelas before. They are pretty cool. Only thing about them is that they range so much in the "looks’ department. What I mean by that is I bought 3 of them back about 2 months ago. One of them looked really nice with the two tone effects of the mix of burling and cork, while the other two had VERY little burling in them and you really couldnt tell them apart from a normal low grade naturl cork grip. Kind’ of a “hit or miss” type thing as to how much “burling” will be in each one that they send ya.

Adding some cork sealer to them helps to bring out the two tone effect a bit more as well.
