I have a reel with no marking on how much backing I can use for a 5WF line. Is there a simple way to correctly calculate the amount of backing I should use?
Thanks,
Paff

That, but first put on the fly line, then the backing, to get the right fill level. You have to take it all off and reverse it, of course, but I’ve found this method the only satisfactory way of getting the backing right.
Just one caveat with filling the reel. Sometimes when you’re fighting a fish the fly line doesn’t always go on evenly and can bunch up at one side and then jam against the line guard.
So leave room for this if you are fishing for something than can pull out lots of line.
can you look up the reel on line? sometimes you can find the specs.
Bob Sedlak,
That’s what I thought - thanks for confirming.

Take it to your fly shop. hand him your reel and line, buy the backing from him and have him put it on for you. If he knows his stuff (and I’ll bet he does) he will get it right first try and you only pay for the 77 or 123 yds you need. not 100 or 200 you would buy if you do it yourself. and he will tie the knots you forgot how to!

Rich Ward,
Thanks!
JC - you mentioned the 1/4 inch already. Noted.

You can make a really good cheap (less than $10.00 ) line winder that will take the difficulty out of winding your line and backing off and on the reel .
click the following link .
I also like Rich Ward’s idea ,take it to your local flyshop . It is a service they are usually willing to do for customers .

Hey Paflyfisher,
What JC said! When that big bruiser
takes your offering, your not gonna be
watching to see that your line is winding
perfectly flat. Your apt to have a build up
on whichever side your favoring. Hopefully
that 1/4" will prevent your line from
binding. Can’t say it too many times!
Warm regards, Jim
Hey! What the heck IS backing???
Mark
I’d rather be in Wyoming!
Backing is what lets me lose a fish 130 yds downstream instead of 30!!!
Mike
It’s not the fish, It’s the fishing.
