Backing to line knot....how about the Castwell?

I’m not sure I’ve seen the Castwell knot suggested for this??? Will it work?

I just used some gel spun line for some backing and am not totally happy with the connection…[uniknot to uniknot]…seemed like the gel spun cinched down awfully tight…

It occurred to me that a loop in the gel spun would be very small and could work with a Castwell???

What say you???

I guess the basic question is…Is the Castwell Knot a good knot… backing to line… when you want to put a loop in the backing.

Incidentally one of my reasons for wanting to use a loop in the gel spun is because I know from previous experience that it has essentially no bulk.

I dont know about the Castwell Knot but why wouldnt you use an Albright knot for backing to fly line?

Too much bulk…just my opinion…

Maybe your not tying it correctly? Does the bulk affect your fishing the fly line?

“Does the bulk affect your fishing the fly line?”

Could…anything that catches on the ferrules is a negative and could cost a fish…read that trophy…in a perfect world, I don’t want to feel or hear a click if something goes through my ferrule…

“Maybe your not tying it correctly?”…possible… but I gotta be honest with you …I don’t think so

You mean the sheet bend?

wish I was into my backing on every fish I caught!

Jordan…no …it’s similar…but [k]not the same…discussed often on this site…

Who said anything about “every”

I know… I know… I was just hoping that the Castwell Knotzi would make an appearance if I mentioned it.

GREAT!..I wish I had been more patient

How does line go through the ferrules ??? The only proper join is a splice, waxed thread wound carefully, whip finished and rolled. Never known to fail if properly done. And it goes through rings like a charm. Jim Clarke

If you are hunting trophys in the salt I’d suggest a double Bimmini twist.

Lineside, yup, thinking that too for the gel backing. But, still like the Albright for the line end.

A little confused on this one. Ferrule is where
rod pieces connect, how does your line effect that?
Are you talking about GUIDES?

GUIDES…indeed    unfortunately not the first time I’ve done that …and I’m not even dyslexic though sometimes I wonder

You called? Why the shot?

Having just read all the upper comments I would suggest that a BRADED LOOP be attached to the line then a tucked blood knot to this for the backing.

Brian.

“Backing to line knot…how about the Castwell?”

If you’re so unsure how about that Allbright? A standard!

SPLICE IT !!!
