Backing for large reels

When I got my 8wt reel for saltwater I noticed the guys at the fly shop put around just a bit of backing (75 yards if I’m not wrong).
I’ve looked around and, of course, the spools of backing only come in 100 yards, what if I want around 125 - 150 yards and all that there is available is these spools? I was wondering if I can buy two of them and just tie backing to backing knowing that I might get a running fish.
Thanks

Ive seen spools of backing that were 100 yd; 200 yd and 1000 yd. I myself bought a 200 yd spool last month. But YES…you can buy a spool and connect it to your present backing with the proper knot and all will be fine

Did you get them on line?

Cabela’s has it in sizes up to 1200 yards.

Or visit your local retail fly shop. Most, if not all will put backing on a reel for you…just the amount you want or need.

Brad

I get a lot of that stuff from Bob Marriot

I’m not sure what it is with the fly shops but I’ve been told “oh you don’t need all that” be it a matter of preference or wanting less fly line coil I like my reel full of backing. That’s why I prefer to buy it myself.
This guy was buying a reel and he got just a very small amount of backing but I guess he didn’t know so he said nothing.

One of the points of large arbor reels is that you don’t need a lot of backing (unless, of course, you’re fishing for species that might run a long distance.) The larger arbor takes the place of a lot of backing for purposes of minimizing coiling and mechanical advantage when retrieving line.

Personally, I’d rather have a smaller arbor reel and a lot of backing.

I already have the reel half full, I just gotta buy around 50 yards or so. I was planning to use the blood knot.

Yepper! Pull it up real tight and the rod will never know the difference…if you ever get down that far into it.

Thanks Sully.
