Back to FAOL, back to fishing!

Hello all. It has certainly been awhile since I’ve visited FAOL on a regular basis, and I’m glad to be back. It has been one heck of a few months since I stopped and I’m glad that I now have time to relax and enjoy my old hobbies of frequenting FAOL and fly tying, as well as the occasional fishing trip. In case anybody cares, I’ve devoted my life to music this past few months, and I’d just like to say that it was worth it. Our high school marching and got a new director (the fourth in a row) and our band has taken a huge upturn. Things are great. I am now currentlly working on some percussion ensemble stuff and getting myself prepared to audition for a DCI drumline next year (DCI is basically professional marching band.) It has been an eventful semester, but winter break started today and I finally have time to breath now that marching band is over. So, I’m back and glad to be back to my family at FAOL.

We left the light on for you. Have fun.

Welcome back!

nen-bran,
To welcome you back, here is my Dad’s favorite marching music and maybe the best marching music ever:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdnJENVT5qA
Doug

Thank you all! Doug, I am a big fan of Sousa’s, thanks! While some marching bands still play the greats, like those of Sousa, most play much different music. One of my favorite shows from one of my favorite corps is this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLP55rkF0lA This is only a portion of their show, which is by regulation 11 minutes long.

The drumlines that I want to try out for are also very different from what they used to be: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGE7K1jqyfY I hope to try out for this corps next fall, and march them next summer. What and experience. This video corresponds to the first, as in this is the same music, just without the whole band.

I wondered where you had run off to. There is a high school not to far from my house and each year we can hear the band practicing. Something about the music of a marching band that raises your spirit.

Glad to have you back.

I started marching in drum & bugle corps over 50 years ago. I still march in one…only now I carry the American flag in the color guard. No more marching in field shows. The corp I belong to just marches in 6 - 8 street parades a year. What DCI corp on you interested in joining? Although I prefer to watch DCA corps, I’m Also interested in the DCI corps. Good luck. You will never regret the experience of joining a corp.

Gentlemen,
Please inform the ignorant. Is there a difference between a marching band and a marching drum and bugle corp.? Answer seems obvious but…
The reason I ask is that one of my favorite marching bands was the University of Wisconsin at Madison . Their “5th quarter” performance after a Camp Randall Stadium ( home) game is absolutely memorable.

Mark

Marco, I just asked Google and they said they would tell you;).

There is a difference. A drum corp basically has drums and bugles (horns). Horns of all sizes and shapes. They all sound different. The corps compete against one another in street parades or in field shows. The field shows judge the corp not only for their music and how it is played, but also for marching and maneuvering. Each corp starts off with 100 points and deductions are taken off of that. The scores decide the winners as far as money or titles that are awarded. Street parades are very similar. In both competitions the judges are out there with the corps. It’s not unusual for a judge to get bumped because he/she was in the way. Bands and drum corps are the same in that they both put on musical shows. Otherwise there is a big difference.

Thanks to all! It’s so nice to be back! And TyroneFly, I’m glad to hear that the music can raise spirits, cause it sure raises mine making it!

Ridgeliner, I’m thinking about trying out for either Blue Knights or Santa Clara Vanguard. If I make Blue Knights, then I will probably move on to Phantom Regiment.

It’s been a few years since I’ve been to a DCI show. I’ve actually seen the Santa Clara Vanguard and the Phantom Regiment. The DCI championship used to be held at the stadium the Buffalo Bills play at. It hasn’t been there in some time.

Yeah. Every year, some corps play in El Paso, TX, a short distance from where I live, and I’ve been to two shows so far. Let’s see…I’ve seen the Cavaliers twice, Blue Knights once, Vanguard, Crown, Scouts, Academy, Crusaders, Colts, and Sprit. I think that’s it. I really want to see Phantom in person because youtube doesn’t do justice to what I can tell is a monstrous brass sound!

I found this video on youtube, it’s what I want to play in corps: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyMRO6ttTMw#

And I heard some exciting news at 10:30 last night! A very good friend of mine, and one our former drum majors is now a drum major for the Blue Knights! I have connections now haha.
