Does the name refer to the Ausable in Michigan or New York?
I suspect New York because it’s a Fran Better’s design and because Lee Wulff was a New York/New England guy. But I could be wrong.

New York, and it is dressed so heavily for better floatation and visibility in pocket water and faster flows. The Ausable in Michigan runs very smooth like a spring creek so flies fished there are for the most part sparsely dressed. But that’s not to say that the Wulff designs don’t work in Michigan, because they do.

the write up on the orvis site has lee wulff as the developer. but i believe it is fran betters.
Fran Betters from Wilmington, NY is the one, and it WAS made to fish the Ausable in NY. Great fly…real high floater, and good catcher, too. I watched Fran tie a few a couple of weekends ago…then proceeded to buy them.

My God! I can’t believe Orvis is wrong about something.
Lee developed the style, Fran put the Ausable wulff colors together.
It is my opinion that the thread is the most important part. A hotspot on any fast water fly improves its effectivness. Same reason fish strike at strike indicators more in fast, broken water than smooth, slow water.
Hi my name is Brookie, as most of you know Fran Betters passed away acouple of weeks ago .
i knew Fran the last twelve years and yes he did but together the Ausable Wulff and it’s colors.
Also the usale, the Hay Stack and other flys that are used a lot here in the Adirondacks
This instance is possibly due to the proximity of Orvis in Manchester,VT and Lee Wulff’s boyhood home in Shushan, NY that is only about 10 miles away. There is also a streamer called the Shushan Postmaster the origin of which is unknown by me.
Might just be me, but the aforementioned link shows Orvis giving Betters the credit for the fly.
Maybe your voice has been heard?
Orvis gives Fran Betters the credit.
read this and you may discover the origins of the ‘shushan postmaster’
