Has anyone found a good substitute for Aunt Lydia’s Rug Yarn?

Thanks Ron but I was hoping for a material that I could buy in skeins for about the same price as Aunt Lydia’s, say a buck a skein smile. I chop the stuff up and mix it with other materials for custom dubbing.

I know they still use the stuff for making carpet but I don’t want the try to shave carpet by the yard, and besides it is darn hard to find carpet in the shades I want.

If you stop in at Michaels, Pat Catans, JoAnn Fabrics or any store like these, you should be able to find just about any kind of yarn you are looking for. If they don’t have it, you can always ask if they can get it for you.

When I purchased carpeting for my home two years ago, every carpet store I went to gave me a board with 1x2 inch blocks of carpet in all the colors offered (usually around 30-40 colors) for that make/style of carpet. I can now make virtually any color dubbing I want with all the colors I have. You might want to go by the carpet stores to see if they have any sample boards discontinued carpet. Just a thought…

Hey Joe,
Thanks but that is were I started. None of those stores carry it anymore. To the best of my knowledge it is no longer made. The crochet yarn is cotton not acrylic.

That is an idea but I was hoping for larger quantites without the work of cutting up carpet. I have attempted to contact Antron suppliers without success.

Why not Google “Aunt Lydias Craft and Rug Yarn” I did and found many sources. One even listed stores in my area. Most were yarn and weaving supply stores. Might be the craft store stock a less expensive brand now days. Watch when you visit a ladies weaving store—I did and wound up with a trash bag full of their scraps. Great for kids tying Wollybuggers BILL

Just curious if anyone has carpeted their house with a colour so they could get some dubbing from the left over scraps? Now that would be being addicted to fly tying :slight_smile:

There is two types of Aunt Lidia yarn. Rug and the other “Craft and Rug” yarn, I use the craft and rug sparkle yarn for bodies in place of chenille. Olive makes great olive wollybuggers-------BILL

I use Needleloft yarn in it’s place…nice sheen and mixes well as a dubbing.

Ohiotuber–I havent forgot you. Im doing a little emailing to find where CARON sparkle yarn is sold. The Aunt Lydia is called Caron Aunt Lydia also. Most of mine came in the trash bag that I mentioned earlier. I noticed that fly shops have it 15 FT for $1.49 . One card with mine shows 60 yards for 67 cents. BILL

Maybe some of this will help, but since I don’t really know what you are looking for I am not sure. This is a good place for Yarn though.
