Hi to all of you out there that are monitoring all things fly. I’d like to know if any of you are familiar with any fly equipment auctions other than e-Bay. I’ve been there looking for some rods and components but they’re just too full of periphery type stuff. I’m looking for the places where the dyed in the wool fly fisher might go to look for good “stuff”. Thanks in advance for any help. You can respond here or email me at rodguys@hotmail.com
I’ve bought on eBay and you can find some bargains there but you can also find some way over bid items. I have seen rods and reels selling for more than what you would pay at current retail.
I always research everything I bid on first. Often I will find that the item is on closeout somewhere and the bidding exceeds the current price. As is said, let the buyer beware!
I have also bought many items here, on the for sale board. I have found many bargains here and the transactions have always been pleasant. In fact I’m waiting for some things I bought last week to arrive.
You should use caution anywhere you buy from. Sometimes a lister here will be a first post and or have a free, non traceable e-mail address. While this does not automatically mean a rip off to me, it does prompt caution. If, in corresponding with the individual that has the item for sale they reply with a real e-mail address that is assigned to a customer of an ISP I feel much better. I also feel better if the seller has a history of posts here, in the same way I feel better if a seller on eBay has a history of good feedback.
Anyway, good luck in your bargain hunting and do give the for sale section here a look. I feel it’s a great place to buy equipment.
I have bought 3 rods and 2 reel from 2 diffrent flyfishing boards. Most of the time the best deals have come from a fishing boards in my own state and the seller even delivered them. So far by being carefull, I feel I have gotten some reel good deals this way. As an example a brand new ST Criox Ultra LU 8WT with plastic still on the handle and all tags still on the rod and case for $150 delivered a block from my house. I have also worked out some good trades on fly fishing sites.
That being said you need to be carefull sometimes. Lost out on one trade in which I gave up a brand new depth finder for a low grade 4 wt before I knew much about fly fishing gear but I feel I have gotten good deals ever since. Lucky for me since all my saltwater boats came with good depth finders already on them I still have never had a use for that depth finder.
Besides by buying from the flyfishing boards I never got into a bidding war with someone else.
First, thanks for all your replys folks. We appreciate the input. It didn’t take long for someone to put two and two together. So that everyone knows, rodguys is our username at The Global dorbeR Group. After your responses I contacted Ladyfisher to try to find out what to do. Her recommendation was to be honest. So we will be. The reason that we asked for information on possible auctions was to try to move some old inventory, old rod samples both domestic and foreign, components and things we don’t sell anymore. It’s all good stuff that we just want to get our money back out of. I know that FAOL’s items for sale section is not for commercial use. You all have been so responsive to us since our beginning that I didn’t want to do anything to jeopardize our standing with you. So we were going to just try to sell old inventory at the various auctions. We don’t want to be horning in on the wholesalers and jobbers either. But we have a LOT of money tied up in old stuff. Most all of you know how to contact us. Should you be building a rod and need some sort of widget for it we may be able to help.
rodguys, first let me say that for me, transactions with Dorber have also been pleasant!
As far as auction sites go, eBay is the most visited and used by people looking for equipment. There is nothing on the Internet that comes close.
I was wondering why you don’t list the equipment on your site the way you have the “Blemished and Overstocked Fly Rod Inventory” listed? It would help to be more descriptive on that page as well as any other listing items, maybe pictures and descriptions.
I would agree that the best thing might be to put the items up on your own site. If you really wanted to run it off of an auction type of deal, then setting up an ebay store could be hard to beat.
As a third alternative, however, if you have the webspace on a server that will serve up ASP pages, I have an old auction site that would function nicely for a limited number of items at a time (Like no more than about 100 per ‘auction’.) For more on that, hit me up through my email.
I agree with suggestions above. Many of the sites I frequent have Bargain/Out of Stock/Used type of postings and I visit them regularly to check and see what they have. It has the additional benefit of prompting me to go to the web site periodically to see what may be new. While there I usually also check other sections of the site, especially if I am already buying something from the bargain portion.
you folks and have referred friends to you.
I have a real liking for shorter light
weight rods and you have a better selection
than most outfits. If you folks were to
put up a “One time good deal extra special
closeout on discontinued models sale” I’d
be all over it, and I’d see that my fishing
buddies knew about it as well.G Warm
