before you go out on the water is it ok to have some of you deeper water flies already on tippet with a knot already to go on your top fly save a little time?
mudflaper
Nope, the fishing police will come and ticket you.
I can’t think of a reason not to do this, the main problem I can see is keeping the tippit untangled and keeping it kink free.
I have heard of people who are lacking the eye sight to tie on small flies in low light doing this with small flies at the bench and then just attaching the tippit when stream side.
If you figure out a kink/tangle free way to store these and carry them to the water let me know.

And that is where these BOXES shine…WAHOO!

$24.50 plus S & H for something else to carry ???

What IS that thing ?
Mudflapper -
The times I tried pretying tippet to a trailing fly, I ran into the twisted and tangled tippet thing. Even with the Orvis rig, or that thing Jack posted, how would you get the length of tippet right ? Seems like it would be compounding the streamside preparation.

Don’t do it Mudflapper…
It goes against all ethics and fishing lore.
If you show up at the water actually prepared to fish, the fishin gods will smite you with poor fishing, small fish, and tangled lines.
Be like the rest of us, waste time on the water. The sacrifice of prescious fishing time tying knots and rerigging in general is the requirement for a successful outing.
Beware the wrath that falls upon the prepared fly fisher…

John;
That thing is a “Tackle Buddy”. I used to keep an assortment of jigs on it.
Put the leader loop over the molded in hook, wind the leaders around the tube and stick the jig in the soft pvc.
The bait guys keep their spinner rigs on something very similar (identical?) to what Orvis is selling only at a fraction of the price. They work just fine, as does the tackle buddy. Scientific Anglers has also got an insert for their System X boxes that also does the job pretty well but only hold a few rigged flies.
Why not just use a piece of swimming noodle?
Anybody ever tell you guys you’re CHEAP LOL
I had one of those tube things also. Easy to make. Piece of PVC wrapped with Velcro and little patches of the other side of the velcro to hold them down.
I don’t understand this “LURE” stuff though LOL
You DO realize on the Orvis box, that those deviders come out and you only need to carry ONE.
My grandpa used to do the same thing using a piece of card board.
Can’t get much cheaper than that!!
I use the Orvis one (a single one) on the rivers if I am running droppers and change. Great for putting the dry dropper away and saves on tippet.
I use to tie and sell #30’s and #32’s at the store. The gentlemen that bought them mentioned they had a hard time getting them on their tippet, so I started tying them with 12" to 20" of tippet on them. They loved that idea.

As long as we are talking CHEAP, my last fly rod blank cost $.89 including tax.
More about that later, at the right time and place.

Back in the medieval days when I used a corky and yarn on the end of 2-3’ leader, I’d keep them rigged up and wrapped around a piece of hot water pipe insulation. I think a 6’ length runs about $1.25. Ace is the place. The one in my neighborhood carries snap swivels too.
Hate to admit it, but I have that same Orvis box too. And I really like it. But what I use it for is deep water nymphing. I did try to pre-load them (with flies) and it did work- for a while. then I got lazy.
I have different lengths of flourocarbon with a perfection loop on the end of each “cartridge”- 10’,15’,20’,25’. On a kickboat, cardboard’s just not going to cut it. You want to use it, go for it.
I haven’t found anything that a bait chucker uses that’s the same. I don’t mind spending a little more for what I want. I don’t drink latte’s, or cappachino’s like some of you do. I don’t drink expensive whiskey. I like cheap beer. So, therefore I can, did, and will continue to buy nice, expensive, overpriced fly fishing gear just to **** some of you off.
i really thankyou for your information it always help
I use one of those small round rig storage boxes that steelheaders use for their corky rigs. I can not recall the name of them but they are a round plastic container about 4 inches in diameter with a cork lined center for imbedding the hook. The leader goes in a slot and by turning the container it is wound inside as the container is 2 parts. You can put about 2 dozen pre-tied droppers in one container and they easily fit in your fly vest pocket. They cost about $7 each. I will try and find the name of them and post it. They are Great!!

Ok, I found it. It’s called PIP’s box and it is made by Mack Lures. You can see it at www.macklures.com and if you want to see how it works, go to www.macklures.com/pipvideo.asp. I bought them at various fishing tackle shops (not fly fishing shops) here in the Northwest like Joes and Sportsman Warehouse, but you can buy them direct from Mack Lures at;

Pretty cool. Size of maybe a smaller reel. At $8.99 for the disc and $9.99 for the container.
Orvis Dropper Rid Fly Box. The size of a medium fly box at 7"L x 4"w x 1 1/4" D. $24.50 for the box and 5 cartridges that can be stowed in a vest or pack, even a shirt pocket individually, each will hold multiple flies. just $5.50 more for…more?!
The basic Pip’s box (the $8.99) is fine for most applications including steelhead flies and rigs. I have about 3 of these with different nymphs tied onto dropper length tippet. They easily fit is a fly box pocket of my vest.
