Arizona fishing

Greetings from Canada,

I am a trout and atlantic salmon fly fishing guy from eastern Canada. I am planning a trip to Scottsdale Arizona next year in February. I know I’ll be thinking fishing when I experience that nice weather… I would like to fly fish for one or two days during my stay. Any suggestions ?

Thanks

Paul

Oak Creek near Sedona. It’s about a 90 minute drive from Scottsdale. Trout and beautiful scenery.

The folks in the Orvis store in Scottsdale were very helpful when I was there. Stop in and ask about different access points.

take a 3wt or 4wt and enjoy fishing for spooky stocker trout in one of the prettiest places around. I really enjoyed oak creek. It is to cold to go into the mountains NE but it is great in the summer time.

Send Buddy Sanders a pm. He’s from Arizona and i’m sure he could help you.

Now, for a small water man such as myself, that’s a pretty stream.

Didn’t know there was any angling for trout that far south in AZ. Thanks for the psot.

Try here. Home of Simi Seal and right next to Scottsdale. Check the gallery while your on the site.

Funny. I’ll be there in a month.

Figure I’ll fish the ponds at the Hyatt Gainey Ranch - gills, bass, and grass carp.

Thank you for the information. I’ll be sure to check it out.

I have never fished out in AZ in the winter but I know they stock the Salt River in the Phoenix area during the winter with trout. There are several parks around Phoenix with warm water species and I understand you can do well in Yuma for LMB.

I have been told Lee’s Ferry on the Colorado is outstanding year round but it requires a boat to go upstream.

Summer’s the time to trout fish up on the Mogollon Rim. Got my largest rainbow up there also Apache trout, grayling and cutthroats.

If you haven’t been this will give you an idea of AZ in the summer that most people don’t know about, one of the best kept secrets in the USA.

gutbomb,
Thanks for posting this photo! I would love to be there right now.

I would rather be there as well.

I’ve heard that if you fish the Salt when it’s stocked, that you’re sitting on a bucket with a carton of worms next to you.

In certain parts of the river that is true.

In February you have alot of choices. Oak Creek is nice this time of the year. Lee’s Ferry is fishing great right now. Urban lakes are stocked with trout as is Saguaro Lake. Pleasant lake is turing on.

Hey Lucky-

Is there any decent flyfishing to be done in Canyon Lake? My mom owns a place in Gold Canyon, so I spend a decent amount of time on that side of town.

Canyon lake at the second bridge is great fishing for small mouth. They have been stocking them lately, since most died off in the algea bloom. Fishing should be getting good for bass here in a week or so.
