Can you believe we have information on fishing Argentina right here on FAOL?
Click on FEATURES, then Worldwide, then South America. I know, at the bottom of that article is a listing of other articles on S.A. including 7 on Argentina. Have fun.

The fishing all over the Argentine Patagonia is excellent, but I will say this: unless you a very good caster I would avoid Tierra del Fuego (southern Patagonia trips for sea-run Browns and salmon). The weather down there is very unpredictable and the winds can be absolutely brutal. I’ve heard Lefty Krey, Mel Krieger, and others of that stature tell stories about how challenging it was for THEM when they got snake-bit by strong winds down there. Personally, I wouldn’t want to spend big bucks on an international trip and run a fairly high risk of having that happen.

The area with the highest concentration of legendary trout water in Argentina and quality lodge outfitters is in the immediate vicinity of San Martin de Los Andes.

Have hunted but not fished in Argentina but for sure, the southern andes is where to start. I have fished in Chile several times. The Balmaceda / Cohaique area is where I fished. Went with an outfitter called Rumbo Patagon and they treated us very well. As mentioned wind is always a blowing, this area of Chile is also subject to wind but not as bad as the far south of Argentina. If you go, you will learn to cast in the wind.

For sure, go, it is a fanatastic area of the world to fish.

I’ve been to Argentina 3 times, each fishing a different region. I recommend this book because I have read it and find it to be generally accurate. “Fly-Fishing in Patagonia: A Trout Bum’s Guide to Argentina.”

For overall fishing (lakes and rivers) I think the area around Esquel is the best. If you are taking wives then San Martin de Los Andes would be the best combo because of the shopping and restaurants. The Rico Pico region is more undeveloped but offers some monster fish in Lagos 1,2,3 but limited river fishing although the baca at Rio Corvocado gives you the opportunity to catch some nice fish.

Be warned: You will want to stay, the women are beautiful, and the steaks are worth the plane trip alone.
