I will be visiting Roaring River SP here in Missouri Sun. through Tues., Oct. 4 - 6 (pending vacation approval, which I don’t expect to be a problem). I will be staying at the campground, but I don’t know which site because I don’t have reservations. If you are planning to be there or would like to meet up send me a PM. I’ll give you my cell #. Ooh wait, do cell phones work there?
If anyone thinks they might be there, I drive a silver '08 Toyota Tacoma double cab. I may even put an FAOL sign in the back.
I’m pretty pumped about going. This will be my first trip to Roaring River. Is there anything I should know? What is the question I should be asking that I haven’t thought of yet?
R. River is a nice park…no wading except for the C&R area. Tim’s fly shop will have anything you need. If you get bored with park fishing…you might try a side trip to Taneycomo or Crane Creek…Have a great trip.
I’d be there if I could, believe me!!! It’s a nice place. The C&R area is a good place to go for solitude, if you want. Easy wading, not too deep, easy to cast across and moderate flows. The C&R fish are more “educated” than the stockers in the other areas, but still not terribly difficult. They’ll be in the spots where trout should be. There’s usually a porker in or near the hole downstream of the access stairs and across. We caught fish on SJ worms (brown), cracklebacks, black/silver zebra midges and tan elk hair caddis (#16). 6X tippett but make sure you’ve got some 7X if it’s really clear. Stop by Tim’s and he’ll hook you up with whatever you need.
I’m not sure if I’ll make it to Taneycomo or not. I’m a bit nervous trying a tailwater for the first time by myself. Also, it seems like it would be a different kind of fishing than I am familiar with. I probably wouldn’t be very productive there. Not quite sure where to go there either. Unless… someone else wanted to meet up there…
Crane Creek, is a place I’ve wanted to check out for some time. I had forgotten about it though, so thanks for reminding me.
What size of zebra midges do you use? I’ve got down to #18 I think. I’m good on SJ’s & cracklebacks. I’ll need to check to see what size my EHC’s are. And I’ve got plenty of 6x and 7x tippet.
I’ve also got some new colors of Klinkhamer’s tied up that I’ve been wanting to try out.
#18 on the Zebras. Don’t worry too much about sizes (16 or 18) unless you get a lot of refusals. I tend to go to the smaller sizes. But, I think that if it’s presented properly they’ll eat it. Especially if there are several fish stacked in a run. They tend to get “competative” if it’s drag free, they’ll race to see who can eat it first.
Don’t let Taney intimidate you. It’s a very good place to go. Check the real time generation and the schedule for the day before you drive over. See my report below!
Tim Cause your going and you’ll be stopping at Tim’s fly shop (and everyone says the water and fishing is good there), I’d like to go but can’t. I can say from my and others experience a size 14 klinkhammer when not sure what fly to use seems to be a good choice…
Wish I could but my anniversary is the 6th. Probably ought to be home for that:rolleyes:. You’ll have a good time though. We’ve had a lot of good reports coming into the shop lately. When I get to work I’ll check the board and send you a pm.
