Anyone use a nailless nail knot?

I see some talk on knot tying tools for nail knots…I’ve been tying a nailless nail knot for all of my line/leader connections. An old fly fisher showed me and i’ve used it ever since. takes about 30 secs to tie, no tool required and i have never had trouble with it slipping. For the kind of fishing i do(bass, gills, trout) it seems to be adequate.

Any one else use this?

I use that knot too. As a guide I needed to find a simple strong knot to connect leader to line. That one does the trick. I have landed several large atlantic salmon with that knot and never had one fail.

Hi Ripper,

I’ve used the “Nailess Knot” for the last
five or six years and I am pleased with it.
As you mentioned, it is very easy and quick
to tie and requires no tool. Just a bit of
saliva to lubricate it and care in cinching
it up. I’ve never had one fail and even
pulling my line from a sturdy branch usually
results in leader breakage rather than knot
failure. Warm regards, Jim

Only one I’ve ever used for flyline to backing and flyline to leader. Never had any failures with the Nailless Nail Knot .

What Dixie said…I’ve landed some pretty heavy salty fish, and never a failure. If’n it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

I’ve seen Lefty Kreh tie one on a line in less than 10 seconds on a number of occasions at FF Shows. It’s impossible to describe. Are there any pictures in the archives demonstrating it?

Hi Ripper. A nice illustration of the knot at globalflyfisher.com/fishbetter/knots. I think a couple of tries and you would have it
Good fishing!

Hey Folks,

JC’s depiction of the Uniknot here: [url=http://www.flyanglersonline.com/begin/knots2/uniknot2.html:a4970]http://www.flyanglersonline.com/begin/knots2/uniknot2.html[/url:a4970]
…is actually a pretty good picture of
the “Nailess” knot. Imagine that the line
is broken where it enters the hook eye shown
and that the top line is your fly line and
the bottom is your leader. You can lose one
of the wraps as well as I was taught to
wrap the nailess knot 5 times. You can
clip the tags tight against the knot and it
will still hold like stink if properly set.

This might help; and, it’s easy. I did it first try…! Yeh, right!!

Jim

It is the knot I used before switching over to loops, first braided then albright. Quick and easy to tye with out the need of a tool
