Being -15f deg. below zero, I figured it was a good time to get ready for the up coming fishing season. I am interested in what flies work best for lake trout. any ideas?
laketrout eat other fish. Here in Oregon that mostly means Kokanee and Whitefish. I expect a large generic baitfish fly would do well. Are you fishing at iceout or are you going deep later? Just curious.
try something like the magog smelt fly if you are going after the bigger fish.
right at ice-off, find a cozy spot where they’ll be warming themselves. A Griffiths Gnat will likely be the ticket.
Or - using the same fly - late evening (past sundown) in the shallows.
