Anvils Atlas Vise

Has anyone picked-up one of these?
With my foray into the teeny flies I need to move on from my “Danvise”
Any and all Opinions Welcomed.

i have not tried there atlas vice.
but i own the anvil apex as my main tying vise and man do i LOVE it
its perfect for me and im sure the next up in the line is even better

How teeny are we talking? Danvise midge jaw should tie down to size 24 and I would not be surprised if you could go smaller. May be Al Beatty and/or Hans will chime in. Not that I want you to forego the joy of getting a new vise. I was just thinking you could use the $ for buying itty bitty tying materials.

My problem is that I am “Blessed” with Large Arthritic “Sausage” fingers. I have comuciated with Al about “Midge” jaws for the “Danvise”, Al has ground down a set of "Danvise jaws and found it didn’t help. He had surgery on his fingers and it helped I on the other hand don’t want to do that yet. When tying 22’s and down there is not much room for tailing, I am currently working on learning sz. 26’s. Long way to go yet, BUT IT"S MY ADDICTION and I can stop any time I want to!

Oh Yeah it’s a lot of fun just getting those little buggers in the vise to start with

Bill,

I have only handled one Anvil Atlas, so there is a chance it was a ‘Monday morning’ copy not representative of the norm, and it was a big disappointment. Not only am I not convinced of the design, and chosen components, it was a very sloppily put together vise with significant ‘play’ in some of the components and uneven tension when rotating the jaws. Based on the sample I would give it a wide berth. At a minimum I would suggest you handle before deciding.

When it comes to tying on very small hooks, the single most important component is access to the hook as allowed by the vise and jaws design. All other features and functionalities take a back seat to access.

With that in mind, my recommendation as the vise to give serious consideration to is the HMH Spartan, fitted with the Micro jaws. Excellent quality vise, which also comes with a superb warranty.

Cheers,
Hans W

Hans, Thanx for the reply, I take it Anvil “Dropped the Ball” with the “Atlas” and didn’t carry the quality on from the “Apex”.
