A board I help moderate had the same problem…its amazing the weird stuff people try to sell you…amazing like the morning after a wild party…which is totally disturbing and disgusting…but amazing because of it…
I agree that pruning would help clean things out and make it easier from the admins and later down the road.
To Old to be pruned:-? I will have to try and find time to contribute, hopefully later this year.

I don’t think you need to find time to “contribute”. I kind of led that down the wrong path. I believe they just want to clean up the boneyard. Just clean up the database…and they need a measurable way to do that. They have to have some way to determine at what point to draw the line and eliminate the deadwood.
Soooooo…I would think you need not much time at all. Just ask a question. Even if you already know the answer. You don’t even need to go back and read any of the replies. Just go to the “Fly Anglers Online” Phorum and ask a question. I think that would be considered a post.
Geeze I find good communication sooooo difficult. I think I used the term lurker and I am not in favor of that term. It has a negative connation. I meant to talk about read only people. I now have no issues with read only people at all. I considered many many times becoming just a reader with the thoughts that I had not enough knowledge or skill to say aything. AND…when I did post something some holier than thou snoot know it all would make a post putting me down, talking down their nose and implying I was an idiot. I had a hard time getting past that. Nothing pushes my buttons more than some person who thinks he is the god of fishing and posts is such a manner.
Anywhoooo…welcome one and all I say. And I speak for myself…not for FAOL here. I by far am not included in any clan of buddies on here. I walk alone. I sorta beat to my own drummer. I do not follow the sheep. I follow the shepherd. In other words I do not follow the crowd…I thought I followed the leader…the shepherd…but a friend finally informed me I do not follow anybody. I am my own shepherd…and for sure nobody follows me.
BTW I don’t think very many people maintain membership just to get in on the drawing. Heck I don’t even care about it. I have all my gear. I forget to enter most of the time. But anyone who goes to the trouble once a month to enter is probably making a post once in awhile. I can’t see anyone just logging in once a month just to enter…

Can’t these “lurkers” lurk as guests??? or has the site closed off to them? I don’t have any problem with people who lurk, they are learning, aren’t they? I just want RTIDD to be able to run the board as efficiently as poss.
As a very long time lurker who posted very infrequently in the past, I find that I now have 0 posts. Hopefully that has been corrected now!

I have had several interesting conversations in (and about) this post.
I had a bad day earlier this week, and almost posted a nasty retort (ROFL…)
but calmed down shortly… So I know it has touched a lot of nerves if it got to mine… 
Some real good should come of this process, new users / posters may just start to participate now. Pretty please?
I had one VERY good comment from a user that was prepared to have his login purged (even though they already had >1 post) because they fished for things other than trout, and that seemed to them to be the predominant focus of FAOL.
I submit: New folks: IF YOU ASK in Sound off, folks here will be glad to either steer you to the right area to get the info you want, or start up a whole new topic that others may be wanting also, or even send you to another web site that might have what you are looking for.
FAOL is DIFFERENT. It holds family values high. It does not get it’s nose bent out of shape because other vendors or web sites are out there. It is our goal to be a central point to start from. To provide as much info and community focus as we can support, and to help steer you toward the help, training, or community that best serves YOUR needs. No matter where that leads you.
We also recognize that for the past decade, FAOL has been mostly tied to maintaining the site. With little time for fishing or keeping current with evolving web technologies. That is about to change. Dee has been fishing more in the last month than I can remember. We plan on organizing the tons of information so it will end up being easier to find. We plan on using some new technologies, like audio and video to SUPPLEMENT (not replace) the current site.
All this means growing pains.
All this means I’m going to do some things that make no sense on the surface, or rankle someone as their “home” gets redecorated by a dag burn bobber freak no less. In the end, life will be good.
Now - lets all stop beating this dead horse. I have about 5000 accounts that have not logged in at all this year, and have never posted. This is really a non event. Most of this is spammers that have squeaked through in the last couple years, or signed up for a contest only.
So… PLEASE… Lets focus our energies on finding out what these new or never posters would like to see on what I hope will become their new home also.

arent they reading the “warmwater” or the “saltwater” sections of the forum??
there is no forum section thats says “trout fishing only”
I believe I was the one that IM’d that message. I did volunteer to be “purged” if the room was needed, and that the forum doesn’t have the info I use for flyfishing, i.e., saltwater, warmwater. Although both of these areas are available in the forum, the post counts are kinda low.
One thing I did say was that this is a great board, and it is more trout orientated, which is fine.
I was only volunteering to help out with the purge, and in no way was I trying to say that the board is bad, quite to the contrary, it does a fine job, and it is someplace you can go without worrying about seeing something on it that doesn’t need to be seen by young eyes!
Anyway, I was just trying to be of some help, as I do not enter the drawings or use the chat rooms any longer. Tight lines to everyone and have a great day!
