Ant pattern with a Red Bead???

Recently I saw, somewhere on the web, a pattern for an Ant with a Red Glass Bead in the center. Now I can’t find it. Does anyone know where I can retreive this pattern.

I believe it is tied by Harrison Steeves, if that helps.

I have tied and fished this pattern, if it’s the one you’re talking about, with a gold bead since I didn’t have any red ones on hand. It caught Gills and bass. The one I tied has the bead in the middle of the body. with abotu 2 wraps of black hackle on each side of the bead and the rest of the body is black cheniel (sp?) about a size 12.

These are the idle thoughts that posses a man’s mind when he’s not able to fish.

BM – That’s the one. I kept searching for “ANT” and found everything but that one. Thanks…

Why is it, that when you put a red butt or a red bead into a fly pattern, that fish hit them so hard? Not that I am complaining, red is not just for getting the Bulls attention. Just what is it about the color red that is so decisive?

Several years ago I “invented” a bluegill fly with red beads. I called it “Ryan’s Butt”. The fly was submitted for a couple of swaps and I received reports from, Texas, Illinois & Arkansas about the effectiveness of the pattern. Here is a link to “Ryan’s Butt”.

“Ryan’s Butt”, I submitted it to Elmer for his Bluegill Jar of flies. I have had HUGE success with that fly for several years after Tim(Panman) sent me the pattern. I have tied it for a number of swaps with Tim’s permission. Try it…it really does produce!! Kahuna

Bluegill Budd - If you find the weight of the fly to be troublesome try using a non-metallic craft bead for the head. I have used both with good results.

Tim

Panman,
I don’t find the weight toublesome at all. At this time of year, I have to get deep in a hurry to find any fish. Also I can see in the summer an advantage when the little fellows are holding on top and the brutes are below. It is sometimes hard to get a fly to the fish holding beneath the group. This is especially true with Crappie.

The orginal subject of this thread turned out to be a fly called the Black Widow. It looks like a good one and I will tie up a few and give them a try both for gills and brookies come spring.

I also wanted to give Kudos to Elmer Meiler for his excellent tying of Ryans Butt and his great photos.

Tim Anderson

Yes the Black Widow looks good. Also on Ryan’s Butt I usually tye it with orange beads, black hackle and always with a gold bead head.Gills love orange and black. I think the “RED BUTT” thread adds a fish attractant to it, most of the time when I tie it off and cut, I leave two 1/8-1/4 inch tags, then coat with Sally Hansen. It looks like a kind of stinger tail. {:O)

That “Black Widow” is a cool looking subsurface ant!

Richard sure does some good patterns. This ones’ going in my box, bigtime!!

Thanks very much.

Hello All,

Thanks for all the kind remarks about my Black Widow. It definitely is my go-to wet fly here on warmwater. The little Black Widow on a size 14 does look like a submerged ant. I also tie Brown Widows and Gray Widows. And yes, there is something about the color red that makes a fly more effective. At least in warmwater I have found.

My go-to topwater fly is, you guessed it, the Texas BullFrog. Maybe I should tye my favorite olive BullFrog and use red chenille behind the head. Worth a try!

For warmwater, a couple of flyboxes with the following flies in various sizes from 2 to 14, is all I need to catch bream to bass to catfish (at least in Texas):

Texas BullFrog (red chenille next time?)
Black Widow
Hard-Hackle Worm (red bead eyes next time?)
Leech-Mouse
Alien
Hard-Hackle SeaDucer (not released yet)

Of the six above, I have been successful with the Black Widow (actually a push-pull soft hackle) and the Hard-Hackle Seaducer (in a grey/white/silver Krystal flash pattern with red bead head)on trout waters like the White and Norfolk rivers in Arkansas.

Thanks again!

Cheers,
Richard

Richard,
As I mentioned in another post, I liked that Hard Hackle Worm enough to tie a bunch of them in a recent swap on this board. Yea…nice fly! And I added a mono weed guard because I like to pitch my flies back in the salad a little.

I sure wouldn’t mind seeing one of your bullfrogs. I’ll do a search and see if it’s listed…otherwise would you see that you put up a picture or just email one out.

Unless it’s proprietary. I know how fisherman are BG

Jeremy.

Whoops…I found it. And I tied a bunch of those awhile ago too. I like 'em.

(gimme a break - I can hear the snickerin’…its the first thing to go!) :-))

Jeremy.

Wow, this is the same fly I tied for the Wally Swap that a cousin gave me. Thanks for clearing up the history or background for the fly. In the swap I called it “my cousin’s fly” – so all you swappers, now you know. I’m doing some Ryan’s Butts tonight for some ice fishing. Wow, does that look deadly. JGW
