I call these little guys DF Poppers, short for Dying Fish poppers. I lay flat on the water like a small fish struggling in the last moments of life. Bass have a hard time refusing a free meal when they find one, so these little guys often work well when they are not actively feeding. I make them in several different colors including LM bass, Bluegill and Blue Tilapia which are all common forage fish here in Central Florida. I carve the body from Balsa wood, and use two round sequins to make the popper “mouth”. Fun to make and effective little patterns.

Kewl the way you have it laying on it’s side to struggle.

Lee,
Thanks for your kind words. I make these from 3/16" balsa to keep them light and easy to cast. I also make them as divers, sliders, and wake-baits depending on the action I want for the presentation.
Is there a tutorial for that? It looks like a lot of fun to tie. Cool idea and pattern.
Not yet, but I’ll make one and post it when it is done.

Thanks. I want to make a few and try them out on The Juniata River.
I also look forward to your tying tutorial. Beautiful craftmanship.
