Another side of Frank Matarelli

While most, if not all, flytiers are familiar with Frank Matarelli as a toolmaker, specifically for his bobbin holders and whip finishers.

While Frank is presently in his mid-nineties, and keeping a low profile, it is his superb skills as a flytier which I would like to draw your attention to.

The flies pictured below are from the collection of Alice Conba, Ireland, - kindly given to her by Frank at the 1992 San Mateo show.

Many among you may recognise Alice as an excellent flytier in her own right. Thank you, Alice, for allowing me to photograph the flies and share these images.

Cheers,
Hans W

Those are amazing Hans, thank you. Looking at them I am not surprised, they show the same skill and thought that went into his tools. My Frank Matarelli bobbin holder is the only non ceramic one I use. All he did differently, in respect of the tube, was choose an appropriate material. Simple but no one else has done it.
Cheers,
A.

Thanks for posting these. I’ve always been a big fan of his tools.

Interesting tail support.

Indeed

His flies look as well made as his tools. Thanks for posting the pictures Hans. The tail support in the close up looks like he used copper and silver wire to make the support, nice!

Tail support, talk about attention to detail.
