I’ve been covering my nickel silver butt caps with the little rubber thingies, and it just occurred to me that painting SH on the cap might help with the scratches - anybody ever try that? Anybody else got little tricks?
Hello herefishy, some ppl throw their hat on the ground to place the rod butt in for purposes of rigging up. I can see where SH would have to help too though.
That being said, pretty much all of the butts of my flyrods have some scratches on them. It just happens.

A thread on scratchin your butt?
Hey, butt scratches are a sign of flyfishing maturity…or is that scratching your … I’m never sure, get the two confused often. Nevertheless, my butt only sees the ground when I’m taking a break - that still doesn’t sound right, does it! Aw heck, a few scratches on your butt could be prevented by a little Sally Hansen’s - geeeze, that sounds even worse. Sorry, Karen, lest we digress…
Kelly.
Sorry I asked! I’ll just scratch my own butt.
this is just too funny:lol::lol::lol::lol: bump
My wife thought I was crazy for laughing at the computer. Read the thread to her and she laughed so hard she fell in the floor. We really needed this. Thanks guys:lol:
I have a favorite bamboo rod that I put some clear shrink tubing on the butt to heep it from gitin scratched up… Dont like a scratchy butt…
What about a coat or two of rod finish? You might be able to find some clear plastisol to dip the butt cap in at a hobby store, too. I know you can get in black, blue, white, and red.
Keep yer butts out of the dirt and you’ll be fine. The hat trick works, but there may be some butts that won’t fit in a hat. What then?
Great post herefishy…i don’t know about you but at first i failed to see the humor regarding scratched butts, though now i do !

I try to keep my butt out of the dirt. I have a little 3 legged fold up stool for that. Once my butt gets in the dirt, it can be so hard to get it back up where it belongs sometimes.
